Lighting control system designer and manufacturer Prolojik has supplied its award‐winning Power over Ethernet (PoE) Lightmatrix system to prime secure storage facility, The Armitage, in Marylebone, West London.


Specified by facilities technology consultancy firm Tuckers Consultancy Ltd and installed by R B Emerson Group Ltd, Prolojik’s unique PoE Lightmatrix system was chosen in part to meet the challenge posed by a particularly low service void throughout the building. As a PoE product, Lightmatrix is powered via data cabling rather than electrical wiring, which means that the majority of final circuit and associated containment are not needed, significantly reducing the amount of space required to house its infrastructure. As well as powering and controlling super low energy and highly efficient LED lighting, Lightmatrix also enables integration with other building controls for an integrated services network and seamless user experience. At The Armitage, Lightmatrix is integrated with the door entry system, which could instruct the illumination of the unique path to an individual unit when a

storage client uses their key fob to enter the building.


Launched in 2015 and winner of Lux Controls Product Award in the same year, Lightmatrix is the only Power over Ethernet system of its kind in the UK. It combines plug-and-play data cabling with DALI standard features to provide a highly energy efficient, simple to install lighting control system.


Due to the significant reduction in electrical cabling and electrical power used in its installation and operation, it produces savings of around 11% in energy output and installation cost savings of around 30% in a typical commercial building, compared to 240V LED systems. Lightmatrix was installed throughout all client areas within the facility, excluding the reception and garage areas.

The Lo-Carbon T-Series has been installed in windows and a partition wall and was selected as UK-GBC wanted CO2 control for occupancy comfort. Energy efficiency was also key, so a low carbon unit, such as the Lo-Carbon T-Series, was essential.


Now completed, the project has achieved the lowest embodied carbon footprint ever recorded for an office refurbishment in the UK, with the embodied carbon footprint 22% below a comparable “standard” fit-out.

A major UK hospital has implemented an emergency contingency plan to ensure continuity of heating and hot water for wards, operating theatres and offices in the event of failure of its primary boiler system.

The UK Green Building Council (UK‐GBC) has refurbished its London HQ, with the aim of challenging industry thinking as to what is achievable in a small scale fit out.

The FM company responsible for building services on the large hospital site contracted Watkins Hire to provide a high efficiency standby boiler system to replace the main boiler in the event of failure, under the hire specialist’s Temperature Control Emergency Planning Services (TCEPS) scheme. TCEPS provides total assurance for end users who rely on critical plant to maintain business continuity. It covers the provision of standby plant to generate steam, hot water, heating, cooling or dehumidification for vital temperature control. Failure of existing plant in critical applications can have disastrous consequences, including downtime, closure of facilities, financial penalties, loss of revenue and, in healthcare situations, a failure to carry out a duty of care. In addition to hospitals and care homes, key sectors covered by the scheme include the manufacturing and process industry, hotels/leisure and IT/telecoms. The project, alongside the Olympic park, comprises construction of a tunnel portal, a new, elevated station for the Docklands Light Railway and an Emergency Intervention Point (EIP) Building. The latter delivers several functions in one building: it allows access for emergency services, provides an evacuation point, and serves to ventilate the associated tunnels. To deliver the ventilation, Gilberts’ WH75 high performance louvres have been supplied. Single bank screens integrated into the concrete cladding have been created from a series of kit form louvres, supplemented by penthouse turret housings on the roof to provide efficient stack ventilation.


“Quality was a major consideration in the whole pitch,” explained Gilberts Blackpool’s Sales Manager John Hanger. “It was a stringent specification, and project management was complex to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum. Our quality – through to being ISO 9001 accredited – was a determining factor in winning the business.”
