Two AirMaster mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) units from SAV Systems are helping to maintain good indoor air quality (IAQ) with demand controlled ventilation in a ‘landlocked’ classroom at Beech Hill Primary School in Newcastle.


The IT room at Beech Hill previously had opening windows but became ‘landlocked’ following building extension work, creating a risk that IAQ would deteriorate. Newcastle City Council therefore decided to introduce an MVHR system. Several options were considered and AirMaster was chosen for its ability to meet key criteria that included low noise, energy efficient performance, draught avoidance and minimal visual impact on the room.


The AirMaster units are semi-recessed into the 300mm ceiling void to minimise intrusion into the space. They are connected to the outside using horizontal ducting, designed to pass through the void space over an adjacent meeting room. The inherent low noise design of AirMaster units ensures that casing breakout noise does not exceed 35dB(A) at full throughput.

and I couldn’t hear them. The room temperature was comfortable, even with all the PCs operating.” The 2 x AML units are controlled through the Airling ORBIT control panel, with demand control achieved by combining a PIR occupancy sensor with a carbon dioxide (CO2) sensor. This ensures that the AirMaster units maintain minimum ventilation levels when the room is unoccupied, ramping up as soon as occupancy is detected. The IAQ is then monitored via the CO2 sensor to ensure that the average CO2 level does not exceed 1,000ppm. By having heat recovery and demand control of ventilation, the AirMaster units at Beech Hill help to minimise energy consumption and carbon emissions. The problem arose as several local authorities in East London embarked on a construction project that would create additional housing in an attempt to solve the ever-increasing demand for affordable housing. When the new properties where added to the district heating system, one that was already operating close to capacity, three separate 500kW modules eventually broke down under the increased load. It was imperative to find an alternative heat source to support the existing system, enabling faulty units to be taken offline for servicing, replacing if necessary. With one of the largest boiler hire fleets and an extensive network of depots the boiler division of Andrews Sykes was an obvious choice to supply a workable solution. It could respond extremely quickly to prevent


further disruption to the Local Authority’s district heating system. Contacted by the area's energy supplier who sought a temporary rental solution, engineers from Andrews Boiler Hire conducted a thorough survey of the site. The decision was taken to supply a high capacity 1,500kW containerised boiler which was then connected to their existing system. Due to the location of the client's premises, it was recommended that a 9,000-litre fuel tank was skated inside the main plant room to prevent it from being stationed next to a relatively busy road. This ensured the temporary system was kept behind closed doors while anti-vandal doors and a heavy duty padlock guaranteed the equipment's complete safety while on hire.

Crawley Borough Council has opened what is believed to be the first hoist‐ assisted toilet at a leisure attraction in the area, at Tilgate Park.


An innovative solution to answering the call of nature


Acknowledged as being the area’s “jewel in the crown’ with its nature reserve, fishing, lakes, gardens and forest adventure experience, Tilgate Park welcomes over one million visitors a year. By opening the first Space to Change wheelchair-accessible toilet with changing bench and hoist, the park will now be accessible to even more visitors.


The Space to Change enhances a conventional wheelchair-accessible toilet by also incorporating an adult-sized changing bench and hoist, supplied and installed by leading UK away from home accessible toilet solutions company, Clos-o-Mat.


Vikki Fold, Crawley Borough Council’s Community Development Officer, said: “At a youth event, a teenage wheelchair-user said there needed to be more hoist-assisted toilets in Crawley. Tilgate is having development work done, and the existing wheelchair-accessible WC was big enough to accommodate the extra equipment, so we thought it would be a good idea to tie it in. We are committed to doing what is right for


local residents and visitors, without damaging the Park.”


Space to Change toilets as a concept have been developed by campaigners with the support of Clos-o-Mat to bridge the gap between conventional wheelchair-accessible toilets and Changing Places toilets.

The new five-storey, Materials Innovation Factory is an 11,600sq m facility at Liverpool University. This private public partnership between the university and Unilever will house around 300 materials researchers working to bring the latest innovations in materials chemistry to market. It is an open access environment which boasts the highest concentration of automated and robotic equipment for materials chemistry applications anywhere in the world aimed at providing robust, reproducible data which scientists can use to accelerate their product development.
