EDITOR’S COMMENT & CONTENTS All roads lead to Net Zero by 2050


N


ow that we’re into 2024, with the Net Zero by 2050 target drawing ever closer, it’s time to intensify focus on all the solutions, products and


processes that will help to realise this goal. This year, our own biennial Building Services Forum (BSF) will play its own part showcasing these solutions for the benefit of everyone involved in building services. Many in the industry have worked tirelessly to ensure that the latest innovations and way of working have the low carbon credentials that are needed. If the way we work is less time consuming, less energy intensive and less polluting then we must be on the right path to the realisation of decarbonisation aims. To this end BSEE and the BSF will have an even keener focus this year on subjects such as Net Zero and Zero Carbon buildings; Renewables; Off-site construction; and Retrofitting, with the subjects touched on across all


our news and features pages. For example, predictions for 2024 are that the commercial solar rooftop market is set to take off with decarbonisation high on the agenda, and recognition of the benefits of self- generated energy and affordable storage options. Our new feature on Battery Storage & Renewable


Energy looks at what is to come (pg 6) and shines a spotlight on a ground-breaking hospital project which will produce a significant amount of solar-generated electricity and vastly lower CO2 emissions (pg 8). The potential for buildings to save energy whilst leveraging smart technologies (Pg 20) and just what renewable liquid fuels could mean for off-grid properties (Pg 26) are some of this month’s highlights.
