DJB expands into Asia D
JB Instruments, a manufacturer of accelerometers and vibration testing equipment, has expanded into the
Asia region with the opening of an office in Shanghai, China. The new office will be headed up by Kevin
Li who has many years of experience in the noise and vibration marketplace working with companies such as MTS and Vibration Research. Li will be supported by a sales and engineering team all of whom have direct industry experience with vibration and accelerometer applications. DJB’s managing director, Neill Ovenden,
said of the new office: “The Chinese market is the base of some fascinating research and development in many of our key markets, the new office will provide us with the perfect launch pad to integrate DJB’s unique products into these applications. We have already had an amazing response to our first exhibition in Shanghai in 2018 and we look forward to further events in Wuhan and Shanghai in 2019.” Instrumentation Monthly recently visited
Neill Ovenden at DJB Instruments’ head office in Mildenhall, Suffolk to find out more about the expansion of the company. The move into China marks an important
milestone for DJB but as Ovenden explained things haven’t always run smoothly for the company. The company was founded as ‘DJ Birchall’ in 1974 by Don Birchall, an engineer who created the unique Konic Shear design that features in every DJB accelerometer. For many years, the company continued to supply its accelerometers and vibration test equipment to its regular base of customers. But in 2009, with the sad passing of Birchall, things took a negative turn for the company. Initially it was thought that there was no one available to inherit Birchall’s estate. But after some searching Birchall family members were located and the business is still family owned to this day. Neill Ovenden was brought in as a consultant to oversee the business and assist in the team lead turnaround – Neill stayed on and became managing director of the business in 2013. Since then, the company has gone from strength to strength with staff numbers doubling and a quadrupled turnover. The move into China marks a new
stage for the growing company. From its foundation, DJB Instruments has now turned into a strong global brand with offices in both France and China. The company exported 65 per cent of its production in 2018 and this is expected to rise to 75 per cent in 2019. DJB has eyes on other markets too. The opening of the China office is the first of a number of new

announcements that form the basis of a major expansion for the British accelerometer manufacturer. This will encompass new products as well as new staff and further overseas office expansions. To mark this move into China and to tap into
the huge automotive industry in the country, DJB Instruments will be attending two major exhibitions in the region this year. Firstly the 6th China (Wuhan) Automotive Test Expo 2019 at
the Wuhan International Expo Center 9-11 May 2019, this will be attended by the DJB team in China in addition to support from Dr Chang Shu from the DJB UK head office in Mildenhall, Suffolk, UK. The second event will be the Automotive Testing Expo at the SWEECC, Shanghai, China, 24-26 September 2019.
