The Fluke 393 FC CAT III 1500 V True-rms Clamp Meter

Q&A:Solar,

In this exclusive Q&A, Instrumentation Monthly speaks with Fluke’s Hans-Dieter Schuessele, EMEA Application & Technology expert and standardization manager, to find out more about the company’s latest clamp meter for solar applications...

Q

What is the Fluke 393 FC CAT III 1500 V True-RMS Clamp Meter and how does it differ from other Clamp Meters on the market?

The Fluke 393 FC Clamp Meter has been specifically designed for solar applications, offering high safety specifications and ease of use in congested solar combiner boxes. It is the world’s first True-rms solar clamp meter to provide the high safety rating of CAT III 1500 V, according to the latest safety standard for clamp meters IEC/EN 61010-2-032:2019. The Fluke 393 FC can measure up to 1500 V DC compared to standard instruments for this application, which are restricted to 1000 V DC. This makes the Fluke 393 series the ideal choice for the installation and maintenance of utility scale, large industrial and commercial solar farms. Technicians can now make safe and reliable measurements in DC environments. In addition to the enhanced safety rating of CAT III rated insulation at 1500 V in DC environments, the meter also offers CAT IV protection to 600 V AC. The instrument’s IP54 rating makes the Fluke 393 clamp meter suitable for testing solar installations in a variety of climates and a wide range of weather conditions, protecting the instrument from both dust and rain ingress. Another key differentiator of this product is the ability to make

quick, easy and accurate measurements. The challenge is that solar combiner boxes are often small and congested, making it difficult to attach meters to make measurements. The Fluke 393 FC meets this challenge with a 25 per cent thinner jaw than previous Fluke clamp meter models, making it easier and faster to take measurements in restricted spaces. The jaw design is durable, rugged and reliable, and meets the stringent CAT III requirement for creepage and clearance.

Q

What is Fluke Connect and how does it integrate with the clamp meter?

Fluke Connect is available as a mobile app as well as desktop software. It provides access to Fluke’s wireless tools and cloud storage. By running the Fluke Connect App on a smartphone, test engineers can stay in contact with their team without leaving the field and share results in real-time with their colleagues. Fluke Connect eliminates the need for handwritten notes and up to 65,000 data points, including test results, can be recorded over a longer period and uploaded.
