Cases & enclosures W
hen you are specifying an enclosure for an industrial electrical application, the decision is rarely straightforward. IP rating,
material selection, size, access method, cable entry configuration, mounting arrangement, each variable compounds the next, and the wrong choice at specification stage means problems downstream. The CamdenBoss X-Series was developed to give electrical design engineers a coherent, well engineered family of heavy-duty enclosures that addresses these variables across three distinct product ranges. This article gives you a clear picture of what each range offers, where it performs best, and how to select the right series for your application.
WHAT THE X-SERIES IS
The X-Series is a family of three industrial-grade plastic enclosures X6, X7, and X8 sharing a common protection platform: IP66/IP67 ingress protection, IK08 impact resistance, and UL94-V0 flame rating across all variants and materials. What differentiates the three ranges is not the protection level, all three meet the same core ratings; but the form factor, structural approach, and access method. That distinction matters because the right enclosure for a junction box application is rarely the right enclosure for a distribution panel, even if both need IP67 protection.
KEY SHARED SPECIFICATIONS ACROSS ALL X-SERIES ENCLOSURES:
Ingress protection: IP66 / IP67 (dust- tight, jet-resistant, and submersion-rated to 1m/30min)
Impact resistance: IK08 rated to withstand 5-joule impacts
Flame rating: UL94-V0 for both Polycarbonate and ABS variants
Lid options: Solid or clear across all ranges and sizes
Material options: Polycarbonate or ABS same IP/IK rating regardless of material choice
X6 SERIES — IP67 KNOCKOUT ENCLOSURE The X6 is the most application-specific of the three ranges, designed primarily for junction box and cable management applications where rapid, compliant cable entry is the primary design requirement.
The knockout advantage Traditional enclosure builds for junction box applications require the engineer to drill or punch cable entry holes in the field. This introduces risk — an incorrectly sized or positioned hole can compromise the IP seal, and field drilling adds time

and skill requirements to the installation process. The X6 addresses this with industry-standard metric knockouts integrated into the housing at manufacture. The knockouts are sized to accept standard cable glands, preserve the enclosure’s IP66/IP67 rating when correctly fitted, and remove the need for any field modification of the housing. Ideal applications for the X6 include: industrial junction boxes and cable distribution points; IIoT sensor node housings requiring compliant cable entry; building automation and BMS control points; and, compact field enclosures for outdoor-rated industrial installations
X7 SERIES — ELECTRICAL HEAVY DUTY ENCLOSURE
Where the X6 optimises for cable entry, the X7 optimises for structural robustness and internal mounting capability. It is the heavy-duty workhorse of the X-Series designed for applications where mechanical stress, vibration, or the need to mount PCBs and components inside the enclosure drives the specification.
Structural design
The X7’s defining feature is its reinforced pillar- style corner construction. The corner pillars add structural rigidity at the points of highest stress, making the X7 significantly more resistant to impact and mechanical deformation than a standard-wall enclosure of equivalent size. Combined with the IK08 rating, 5-joule impact resistance this makes the X7 appropriate for environments where the enclosure may be subject to physical contact, vibration, or transit loads.
Brass insert points for PCB and component mounting are integrated into the housing, eliminating the need for post-processing. For engineers who need to mount control boards, relay bases, or other components directly to the enclosure body, this is a material time saving at build stage.
Ideal applications for the X7 include: industrial IoT hub housings in warehouse and logistics environments; edge computing and industrial gateway enclosures; control panel housings for automated equipment; outdoor equipment housings for renewables and utilities infrastructure; and, any application requiring internal PCB or component mounting without post-processing
X8 SERIES — WATERPROOF HINGED DOOR ENCLOSURE
The X8 introduces a fundamentally different access model. Where the X6 and X7 use a removable lid with perimeter fasteners, the X8 uses a hinged door with integral latches, a distinction that has significant engineering implications for applications requiring regular access.
Why the access method matters Every time a conventional screw-fixed lid is removed and replaced, there is a risk of gasket displacement, uneven compression, or seal degradation from repeated cycling. In applications where the enclosure needs to be opened frequently, routine maintenance, meter reading, firmware updates, inspection, this risk compounds over time. The X8’s hinged door with latch mechanism reforms the IP66/IP67 seal consistently on every closure. The latch geometry applies even clamping force around the gasket perimeter without the variability introduced by individual fasteners. A hood design over the seal line also prevents moisture from pooling on the seal surface while the enclosure is closed — a detail that matters in persistently wet environments.
DIN rail and distribution capability The X8’s hinged door geometry, combined with its larger size options, makes it the natural choice for electrical distribution applications. The housing accommodates DIN rail mounting hardware, transforming the enclosure into a fully-featured distribution unit, appropriate for field distribution boards, sub-distribution panels, and metering enclosures. Integral lock options allow the X8 to be secured against unauthorised access, and a dual door kit is available for installations requiring access from two sides or extended door swing clearance. Ideal applications for the X8 include: electrical distribution panels and sub-distribution boards; DIN rail-mounted control systems requiring regular access; large-format IIoT hub housings with maintenance access requirements; metering enclosures and utility infrastructure housing; and, any application where the IP seal integrity over repeated access cycles is a design requirement The CamdenBoss X-Series is available through authorised distributors and direct from CamdenBoss.
