MULTI-POINT PRESSURE SCANNING

A new range of pressure systems are now available from Evolution Measurement representing the next generation of multi-point electronic pressure scanning. The Scanivalve DSA3217-PTP

Digital Pressure Scanner incorporates 16 temperature compensated piezoresistive pressure transducers with a pneumatic calibration valve, RAM, 16 bit A/D converter, and a microprocessor in a compact self-contained module, resulting in a network-ready Ethernet pressure scanning module. The DSA3200-PTP series microprocessor compensates for temperature

changes and performs engineering unit conversion. It also controls the actuation of an internal calibration valve to perform online zero and multipoint calibrations. This online calibration capability virtually eliminates sensor thermal errors with a long-term system accuracy of ±0.05 per cent FS (five psi and up). Pressure data is output in engineering units via Ethernet using TCP/IP, UDP or FTP protocol. Scanivalve offers an optional multi-range calibration, which allows the

DSA modules to have multiple pressure ranges. The calibration valve and transducers are manifolded in groups of eight. The user can specify up to three pressure ranges within that group of eight as long as the ratio for all three full scale ranges does not exceed 3:1 from highest to lowest range. The DSA3217-PTP is enclosed in a stainless steel, splash resistant

enclosure intended for most laboratory, educational or other controlled environments. The DSA3218-PTP, however, is enclosed in a stainless steel, splash resistant, shock mounted enclosure with Swagelok fittings on all pneumatic connections. It is intended for applications such as gas turbine testing, flight testing, industrial applications and other more rugged environments.

Evolution Measurement www.evolutionmeasurement.com PORTABLE OIL TESTING KIT

Filtertechnik has developed what it describes as a world first with its new Particle Pal Life self-contained portable measuring system. Building on the success of the award-winning Particle Pal, this new offering provides real-time ISO cleanliness readings, together with water content and oil condition information for over 500 commonly used oils all within one compact kit. Particle Pal Life can provide detailed insight into the health of oil in

real time, measuring particulate and water contamination predicting the oil’s remaining life, helping engineers to make informed choices regarding oil replacement or treatment planning. A 10” touchscreen LCD tablet allows users to view data in clear detail,

while a zoom facility can be used to focus on specific results. Oil ageing profiles for over 500 oils are embedded in the software, as well as the ability to self-calibrate an oil life profile should a particular oil not be on the database. This is a one-time routine in which oil is taken through a calibration cycle. The built-in Tan Delta full spectrum holistic oil condition sensor monitors

the overall condition of the oil, providing data with a high level of sensitivity and accuracy. The sensor introduces a high frequency AC waveform which measures the oil’s ability to store energy (capacitance) and to conduct current (conductance). These two factors indicate how much damage has been done to the oil, expressed as the Tan Delta Number (TDN) which is given as a decreasing number value from a baselined new oil, displayed in real time. Filtertechnik states that its laser particulate counters are accurate to

within+/-0.5 of an ISO 4406 code with a repeatability of +/-0.1 per cent. Reporting in ISO, SAE and NAS classes as well as giving the particle quantity counts in four, six, 14 and 21 micron sizes.

10 PASSIVE HARMONIC FILTERS

Supply, installation and repair specialist, CP Automation, has a new range of harmonic filters available, including the Revcon RHF-A and RHF-B. These filters are used to reduce the harmonic distortion caused by variable speed drives (VSD). To make sure the performance claims of these filters are valid, CP Automation analysed both filter models in a series of tests. VSDs make harmonic noise. This noise goes back to the transformer

and affects the signal generated. This in turn distorts the voltage, leading to overheating of the entire system. Harmonic filters reduce this noise in the first instance, prolonging the life of all equipment. CP Automation's new range of Revcon passive harmonic filters are

easy to retrofit into existing applications, with no need for routine maintenance. Revcon states that the RHF-A and RHF-B reduce harmonic current distortion to 10 per cent and five per cent respectively. However, these figures have been cross referenced as part of a test with a standard six- pulse VSD and DC choke. Without a harmonic filter, findings

showed the drive created a harmonic distortion of 36 per cent. Positively, the RHF-A reduced this harmonic distortion to 6.2 per cent at nominal operation. Similarly, the RHF-B reduced the harmonic distortion to 2.5 per cent. Both performance values demonstrated far better results that the official stated values from Revcon.

"It is important that we test such equipment against official data,"

explained John Mitchell, global business development manager at CP Automation. "It increases our customers' confidence in the products we supply, and ensures we see the true potential of products that often come with somewhat conservative claims."

CP Automation Water in oil causes

additive depletion, microbial growth and encourages contamination from solids. The in-built water sensor shows the humidity of any oil as percentage saturation. Lightweight and heavy duty, the outer casing of the Particle Pal Life is

ideal for working in the field. All Particle Pals are portable field kits with their own pump and battery packs which can last up from three to six hours (depending on oil viscosity). Samples can be drawn from equipment running live under pressure or drawn into the unit via a sample bottle. Viscosities up to 420cst are catered for as standard with higher viscosity oils capable of being measured if pre-heated to 40-55oC. Engine oils can be measured for water content and oil life but not ISO codes as laser particle counters do not work on opaque fluids. A built in SIM card provides an option for data to be automatically

transferred off-site and backed up and viewed at any time. Once data is logged it can be recalled at any time to build trend history. Particle Pal Life is suitable for use in a wide range of applications,

including power generation, off-road mining and construction, wind power, hydraulic and marine.
