CCF AND CEMBRIT WEIGH UP SAFETY SOLUTIONS

partners such as CCF. Like them, Cembrit appreciates the emphasis they put on health and safety and understand the need for efficient working. When the issue came to light, it was clear that it was in Cembrit’s benefit to adapt its pack quantities to enable CCF to safely and easily distribute Cembrit’s products. Understanding CCF’s requirements, we at Cembrit discussed the situation and decided to amend our pack quantities, making it easier for all users of Cempanel not just CCF. This is a good example of how collaboration aids progress in UK construction.”

When leading insulation and building products distributor, CCF, relocated its legacy Park Royal branch to a new site in Borehamwood, new specialist Aislemaster forklifts were required in order to get to hard to reach and narrower areas of the warehouse

T

his necessary equipment update impacted the handling of some

product ranges – as a Counterbalance can lift 3.5T from the ground, while an Aislemaster can only lift 2.5T. Therefore, moving forward, it would be necessary for all pallets of product stocked at Borehamwood to weigh less than 2.5T in order to be handled safely. In particular, cement particle board supplier Cembrit and its Cempanel product quickly needed a new handling solution.

THE PROBLEM As with many building materials, product can be very heavy, and this was certainly the case with the Cembrit Cempanel range of cement particle boards. As well as the challenge of weight of these panels, each pallet provided by Cembrit was also double the width of standard sized pallets, further increasing the difficulty for operatives when manoeuvring the boards.

OVERCOMING THE ISSUE A collaborative meeting was arranged to ensure that a quick solution to this issue could be reached. This included representation from both businesses where thorough analysis of the products

and the Aislemaster forklifts took place. It was agreed that pallet weight reduction would ensure the health and safety guidelines for the Aislemaster would be satisfied, whilst ensuring easier handling of product allowing for the forklift to to be able to hold the product with ease, and for the user to be able to manoeuvre the product safely using the Aislemaster. Now, a commitment has been made by

Cembrit to only supply these new pallets to ensure the safety of its products when being handled and transported by CCF. This has been active since 1st September 2017 with great effect on the handling and logistics process. Lauren Hickling, head of health and safety for CCF, commented: “We always strive to work with our suppliers to make sure we maintain excellent health and safety standards when handling and transporting products across the supply chain. This is a great example of how a simple change can make a big difference and we are grateful to Cembrit for working with us to an outcome that would be positive for both parties.” Ged Ferris, marketing manager at Cembrit commented: “Cembrit values it’s good relationships with professional

THE FUTURE CCF has committed to ensuring that the learnings from this case are now applied to all suppliers moving forward. Now, every case where pallet size may be an issue only two tonne weight and below is accepted. This will benefit the safety of operatives manoeuvring products, and also safeguards manufacturers who need to know that once stock leaves the production line, it is going to be safe and less likely to be damaged or broken during transit.
