PLAYING A STARRING ROLE IN POWERING ITV

F U

K Power Networks Services has been accepted onto a framework that will deliver projects to renew and upgrade Manchester

Metrolink’s electrical infrastructure to help support Transport for Greater Manchester’s (TfGM’s) green transport strategy. The investment and upgrade works aim to meet Greater

Manchester’s sustainability ambitions for a cleaner, greener and more prosperous city region, by supporting a fully integrated, high-capacity tram system across Greater Manchester that is also environmentally sustainable. Manchester Metrolink is already one of the most sustainable

modes of transport in Greater Manchester – the trams are powered by renewable and green energy sources with no harmful emissions, and each can carry more than 200 passengers. The electrical upgrade will ensure that the tram system continues

to meet the city’s economic growth ambitions. The first project that UK Power Networks Services will work on

under the framework is a seven-month programme currently under way, which will include inspecting and replacing electrical equipment, the design of digital signals, and assessment of the current fibre optic communications at electricity substations.

or the last year, PPSPower has been playing its part in keeping ITV on the

screens by providing ongoing maintenance services. The role has also involved engineers being on set at Coronation Street. The national provider of back-up generator

and uninterruptible power supplies service, maintenance, repair and installation solutions is ready to react immediately should any problems arise for the prestigious television production company. The work so far has predominantly

revolved around ProVision, ITV’s equipment rental arm, particularly the firm’s vehicle generators and the lighting rigs for TV production. Work has also been carried out at ITV’s Studios in Manchester and Leeds. Stephen Peal, PPSPower’s managing

director, said: “It can be extremely demanding, but we have extensive experience in high pressure environments when time is of the essence. The cost of equipment going wrong during filming can be disastrous. If there are problems, we are ready to respond and respond quickly. “If they are on a break in filming there is

possibly only a short window to find the problem and fix it before filming starts back up again. But that is a challenge that we are up for.”

NEW TRAINING CENTRE FOR METER INSTALLATION EXPERTISE E

nergy Assets has unveiled a new training centre at Darwen, Lancashire, to provide its 60-strong team of meter engineers with one of the energy industry’s most advanced learning environments.

The investment in the new centre provides engineers with access to every type of physical meter configuration

they are likely to encounter in industrial and commercial buildings, along with a ‘classroom’ space featuring interactive touchscreen technology with self-guided ‘drag and drop’ capability. The centre will be used on rotation by all Energy Assets’ engineers, whether they are upskilling from AMR installer to a meter engineer, or receiving periodic skills and process training linked to the latest technical standards.
