INDUSTRY STARS WIN POWER PLAYERS 2019
H
ello and welcome to the October issue of Electrical Engineering. In this issue, Rexel’s Paul
Bowtell takes a look at how the electrical industry is evolving to meet consumer and business demand to deliver more eco-friendly electrical solutions. Schneider Electric talks us
through its new ClimaSys Smart Ventilation System - an intelligent filter and airflow management solution; TÜV SÜD looks at the standardisation of industrial safety regulations; and we cover the innovative technology which could help save the lives of rural workers and landowners that is being adopted by UK Power Networks. ABB is improving switchgear
efficiency and operational safety with its Ability Condition Monitoring for switchgear (SWICOM); Amsterdam is installing a new intelligent data communications network to support the city’s traffic control system; and Nexans’ Franck Blonbou discusses how the digital transformation of the energy industry is uncovering fresh opportunities for DSOs to extract maximum value from its grid assets. This issue also features a
Lighting & Lighting Controls supplement, bringing you the latest from the lighting sector.

UK-WIDE ASSEMBLY TO FOCUS ON HEALTH AND WELLBEING
H
undreds of engineers are set to inspire young people to become engineers this November. The engineers from a range of backgrounds all
have one thing in common: their work on projects that make a positive difference to people’s health and wellbeing. The engineers on a mission will be the stars of
films and a unique Tomorrow’s Engineers Week Big Assembly, which offers schools across the UK the chance to take part in the same assembly on engineering careers at the same time. The Tomorrow’s Engineers Week Big Assembly
T
wo individuals in the electrotechnical and engineering services industry have won this
year’s Power Players initiative. Policy analyst, Nadia Smith, of the Renewable
Energy Association, and business mentor Dan Jackson, were selected by an independent panel of industry experts, who judged entries based on five criteria: social impact, industry impact, collaboration, innovation and leadership. Outside of work, Smith is a part of the South
East London Community Energy Cooperative, which helps install solar panels on schools and community buildings and uses the funds to tackle fuel poverty. She has also just returned from Ghana, where she taught students practical business skills through the Dream Renewables programme, which she co-founded. Dan Jackson impressed the judges with his
sustained advocacy and support for small business owners. Having previously run an electrical business, Jackson is now a business coach for tradespeople and business owners. ECA’s energy advisor, Luke Osborne, commented:
“Many congratulations to Dan and Nadia, and indeed to everyone who entered this year’s Power Players initiative. “Both winners this year were able to show huge
commitment to making significant contributions not just to their employers or within the industry, but to wider society.”

C4 PRESENTER TO HOST WOMEN IN ENGINEERING EVENT
C
hannel 4 News presenter, Cathy Newman, will host a SOE Women in Engineering event on 12
November in London. Panellists will convene to discuss the role of schools
in promoting positive messages about engineering and career opportunities within engineering-related sectors. On the panel are chief executive of Semta, Ann Watson; SOE lead for women in engineering, Amanda Foster; and Pauline Dawes, CEO/founder of Somi Trailers. Members of the audience will be encouraged to
participate in the discussion, which will address the business case for a diverse workforce and how to promote a culture of inclusion. It will debate the need for rebranding engineering careers and correcting the misconceptions that have damaged the industry and continue to create barriers to entry for young women.
