A clear route to cable management I


n a world where automation and control continues to play an


increasingly important part in many manufacturing processes, it is essential that the components used to manage, secure and protect cables are not only of the highest quality, but also simple to integrate and maintain. As one might imagine, a complex


control panel will have multiple cables, possibly of different diameters, which need to be safely and securely routed and, depending on the environment, sealed from ingress and/or shielded from external interference. Although there are a multitude of cable management products available to designers and engineers, it is essential that, at the design stage, quality and specification are given prime consideration if the highest levels of uptime and reliability are to be achieved. As a company with a track record of over

company is with Italian manufacturer, Detas SpA, which brings a new dimension to the range of cable management


products available within the UK from Buttkereit. The DES (Detas entry system) solution simplifies the process of cable management for a wide range of electrical applications, whilst improving ingress protection against liquids, strain relief, and EMC standards. The range includes solutions for


pre-terminated cables, using a selection of frames and inserts. The frames have been designed to fit the fixing holes of competitor types, however, unlike other systems, the DES frame is capable of accepting multiple insert types to provide the highest level of flexibility in cable sizes and configuration. For standard, non-terminated cable


types, the range includes a wide selection of gland plates. This part of the DES range offers an innovative alternative to standard cable glands on electrical, electronic and telecommunication cabinets and equipment. The cable is pushed through a front membrane, whilst an integrated second membrane increases the strain relief and liquid resistance. The comprehensive range offers protections levels up to IP66, strain relief to EN 62444 and a sturdy construction rating up to IK10. There are many applications where


cables require additional protection and this is where cable conduits are the perfect solution. With a multitude of different configurations, cable conduits offer excellent protection in many different applications and environments. Available in metal or plastic they are food safe, liquid tight, resistant to solvents and UV light, and can even be supplied coated with silicone for added protection. The wide temperature range that this type of product can withstand (-60o +300o


C to C) and IP ratings


up to IP69 K available, mean that cables will

have the highest levels of protection, even in some of the most hostile environments. These products are also suitable for use in medical or clinical environments. There are many applications where


movement is required and it is important to ensure that cables do not undergo undue stresses whilst moving. Retaining or enclosing cables within a suitable drag chain will eliminate stresses on the cables, whist providing a physical barrier from other adverse influences. Cable drag chain systems are available in plastic or metal and open or closed configurations, meaning that there is a solution for every application, including very large or long travel applications. In instances where hot swarf or chips are present, an enclosed steel cable chain will provide the ultimate protection and deliver long service life. It is also important to make sure that


the less complex products, such as those used to provide strain relief or EMC protection, are not overlooked when specifying a comprehensive cable management solution. Integrating these products during the panel build stage will be simpler and less time consuming than realising that they are required once the panel is complete, and perhaps even on site and in production. It is also important that any cable


clamps and trunking used is of a standard that will not jeopardise operational performance or safety. The maximum service temperature of trunking should be checked, and it is also essential that it has passed glow fire testing and does not propagate flame. For cable clamps, they should all be short circuit tested, capable of operating in a wide temperature range (typically from - 40o


C to +1,200o C), and also capable of


accommodating individual cable loads, typically 600 amp.
