ENSURING OUTDOOR VSD OPERATION, WHATEVER THE WEATHER


A


BB has introduced a weatherproof solution which protects drives operating in outdoor locations. A weatherproof enclosure is


available which allows standard, wall-mounted ABB variable speed drives (VSDs) to operate in outdoor areas while remaining protected from weather conditions. The enclosure avoids the need to purchase more costly VSDs with higher IP ratings. IP65 or IP66 are often specified for outdoor VSD installations, on the


assumption that these higher ratings are sufficient protection against the weather. However, a high IP rating does not mean weatherproof and can be more expensive than VSDs with lower IP ratings. ABB’s weatherproof solution provides a suitable enclosure to ensure that VSDs are adequately protected outdoors, enabling the use of IP55 drives. Apart from the IP rating, other considerations when installing a VSD


outdoors include: Ambient temperature and sunlight – outdoor installations


generally have a wider temperature range than indoor installations. Direct sunlight heats the VSD, resulting in over-temperature and tripping of the drive. This can be mitigated by installing the VSD and enclosure on a north facing wall. Cold – extreme cold can damage a VSD, particularly if condensation


forms inside the device. Keeping the VSD powered up generates enough heat to protect it from cold and condensation. Coated boards, included as standard on many ABB drives, provide enhanced reliability against the ingress of dust particles, and can also help to mitigate any water damage. Airflow – VSDs generate heat and, as such, have a need for cooling


air. When the VSD is installed outdoors, the incoming and outgoing airflow must be able to move freely. This is permitted by the weatherproof enclosure. The weatherproof solution can be used with the ABB range of general


purpose drives, HVAC drives, and water industry drives. A range of frame sizes is available to cover VSD variants and power ratings. The backplate is fixed to a wall using the same fixing holes as the drive itself, ensuring a streamlined and easy installation, while still leaving access to the keypad for commissioning. The cover can be removed quickly to carry out drive maintenance.

NEW DOUBLE FORK BUSBAR CONNECTOR D


eveloped to link two high power busbars, the new double fork connector from Stäubli Electrical Connectors has a simplified,


cost-effective design that helps cuts maintenance and replacement costs. One of the forks is fastened onto the busbar by two screws, while the


other fork can accept busbars that are misaligned laterally by up to ±2mm and with angular deviations of up to ±3°. Rated for 5,000 mating cycles, the silver plated aluminium connector


is fitted with Stäubli's Multilam contact technology. This allows a high current density thanks to its use of multiple spring contact elements, and ensures low contact resistance with low power losses throughout its lifetime. The space saving connector can be adapted to customer requirements


with regard to rated current and the dimensions of the busbars. Expected applications are in power distribution and power conversion cabinets with current requirements from 100A up to several 1000A.

he new 180° opening, lift-off Dirak hinge from enclosure hardware specialist FDB Panel Fittings offers a convenient and


robust solution to the problem of how to comfortably lift-off a cabinet door for installation or maintenance. This new hinge, with steel frame component which matches a


zinc-die door fixing element, easily slides into and out of engagement at a 30° opening angle, so permitting simple lift-off of the door. Developed in the conviction that


hinge solutions for industrial cabinet construction require a high flexibility in combination with stability and security during operation, the hinge was conceived to lift-off while retaining a captive fixed pin. The new hinge is compatible with


standard 25mm door returns as typically used on steel cabinets in the specialist enclosure industry for electrical and 19" rack industries and for machine housings.
