A

first-of-its-kind national standard, which marks the

competency of individual electricians in the UK, has been launched by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) in collaboration with the Engineering Council. The national Recognised

Electrician EngTech Standard is for electricians undertaking electrical installation, maintenance and remedial works in buildings and dwellings and is awarded via competence based peer assessment. Such an assessment will provide a national benchmark of competence for electricians working in safety critical roles and means companies will be able to

confidently recruit and retain highly qualified and professionally registered electrical workers. The new national standard

supports the final Hackitt report (published 17 May 2018) which proposes improvements regarding the competence of people who are involved in the design, construction, refurbishment, occupation and maintenance of buildings. It highlights whilst there are many instances of competent people, there is no consistent way to assess or verify their competence that allows individuals to practice with questionable qualifications or without a requirement for competence assessment. theiet.org/electrician-engtech

CP ELECTRONICS PARTNERS WITH RUSSIAN LIGHTING COMPANY TO HALVE ENERGY CONSUMPTION IN WAREHOUSE

A

partnership between a Russian lighting company and CP Electronics has brought a 50 per cent saving

in energy usage to a brand new warehouse in Tyumen, Russia. DEUS LLC and CP Electronics worked with the X5 Retail Group at its 30,000m2 distribution centre, providing a lighting system that was fully compatible with DEUS’ own DALI control system. Previously, X5 Retail Group was

struggling to control lighting at tall heights in its warehouses. The company required detectors that would mount up to 15m to work with its current control system. The entire system also needed to operate offline utilising the presence detectors and to maintain the lighting set point of 250 lux, even where the luminaires are located at heights of at least 12m.

The joint CP-DEUS relationship allowed X5 Retail Group to be fully flexible and adaptable to whatever lighting scenes were required. The main lighting of the warehouse comprised 1,500 luminaires equipped with DALI drivers. DEUS LLC utilised its own ME6 DALI control system, which included 32 control routers and 156 EBDHS-DNET1 combined lighting and presence detectors, provided by CP Electronics. Moreover, the sensors allowed lighting control scenarios to be programmed in,

according to X5 Group’s needs. The warehouse is open all day, every day, and as the requirements change by the work required, so does the lighting. Find out more on the website below. www.cpelectronics.co.uk/OEM
