elcome to the December 2021/January 2022 issue of Electrical Engineering magazine and a belated Happy New Year to you all. I’ve spoken before in this column about my love of politics, and I find myself frequently shouting


at the television or the radio when a politician opens their mouth and nonsense emanates. With all the government efforts to curb the Covid-19 pandemic, I fear that the eye has been taken off the


ball when it comes to engineering, although, like the Downing Street parties, Number 10 will probably deny that’s the case. Brexit has forced the UK into negotiating with nations around the world to sign trade deals, but at


what cost? We have great engineers and designers in this country, government needs to realise this – and in


England, I’d call on Prime Minister Boris Johnson to contribute at least £100 billion now, so that UK tech firms can invest in technology. With the aim of being carbon neutral, the UK should be signing local trade deals, with the European
