What are Soft Skills? Hard skills may get you an interview but frequently it is your soft skills that will win you the job. Soft skills are general characteristics that are not specific to a job or industry. Examples of soft skills include leadership, decision- making, teamwork, communication skills, problem-solving skills, people skills, negotiation and non-verbal communication. Knowledge reports that ‘Project Oxygen’, a research study into hiring practices at Google produced eye- opening conclusions. Among the eight most-important qualities of Google’s top employees, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) expertise comes in dead last. The top seven characteristics of success at Google are all soft skills. Students will already have many of the


key personal qualities but may be unaware of how to use them in job applications and interviews. We demonstrate how to make strong first impressions and how to build new relationships.
