Isla Clapperton Degree

BSc Hons Project Management for Construction University

University of Brighton Current job title

Management trainee (project surveying)

Job title as of September Assistant project surveyor

Location London

Length of time with Willmott Dixon I joined in 2016 however I returned to University in the middle to finish my degree

How does the Willmott Dixon management trainee programme work? The programme gives you a great foundation, no matter what area you are interested in. It is a unique opportunity as you get exposure to all areas of the business, which means you develop a really well-rounded understanding of the business, and the construction industry as a whole, not just your chosen discipline.

Describe what you do on a day-to-day basis. No two days are the same! It depends on which area of the business you are working in, you might be on site, or with the design team, meeting with the architects, or attending a careers fair at a college - there isn’t really a general day-to-day!

During my commercial placement, a general day would be: get to site, have a catch up meeting with the team and then it depends what stage the project is at. You might be right at the beginning stages of the construction phase, so, as a surveyor, you’ll be focusing on aspects of

the site set up, procurement of the project’s packages, working through the scopes and setting up meetings with the supply chain. Or, if you are in the middle of a project, you will be more focused on monthly valuations and payments. Whereas at the end of the project, it’s all about the final accounts and meeting deadlines!

Which skills do you think are the most important for your role? Communication is key and so fundamental to everything we all do! However, there are so many different roles in construction, I don’t think there is a particular skill set that you need, but having a drive and eagerness to learn is important.

What do you enjoy most about your job? I love how varied it is. You get involved in so many things, and I really like how many different people I have the opportunity to work with.

What is the best thing about working for Willmott Dixon? The people!

What’s next for you after your programme finishes? In September I will graduate from the programme and become an assistant quantity surveyor. I am really looking forward to taking the next step!

What advice would you give someone considering working within the construction industry? Leave all your preconceptions at the door! It is a great industry to be a part of and hugely varied. There are so many roles, whether you think you would enjoy being based on site, or if you don’t think site is for you, there will be a role that suits your skills and interests. It’s challenging but really rewarding!
