Sam is a graduate at the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl)

I

have a degree in MEng aerospace engineering and I work in platform systems, which specialises in technical research for all military land, sea and air capabilities.

What does your role involve on a day-to-day basis? So far, in my first year, it has been mostly coding and the associated problem solving. The work at Dstl can be quite varied. The most enjoyable project I’ve worked on was my time spent working with the Laser Directed Energy Weapons project, specifically on the trials side of things. Outside of project work, the most enjoyable experience was the battlefield studies tour to Belgium and France.

What’s the most challenging part of your role? Honestly, so far, the most challenging aspect has been the work. As I mentioned earlier, the vast majority of my work has been software coding. On the platforms graduate scheme I’m given time and support for development; I’m not expected to

come in and have an overwhelming positive effect on the project from day one. It’s very clear that it’s about my development, not about the end result. As long as I’m putting in effort and getting something out of it, the team are fully behind me. By rotating around the departments, exposing me to the variety of work and addressing my weaknesses on the graduate scheme, I will be a more

rounded, better-prepared engineer when I am put into my team next year.

What’s good about working for Dstl? The work-life balance at Dstl is second to none and flexitime is probably my favourite benefit. Not having to come in and leave at the same time every day is a lifesaver; it means I can plan work around my life, and not have to plan life around my work. n
