How gamification is changing the face of FDM’s graduate recruitment


amification, virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) are increasingly being used as part of the


graduate assessment and recruitment process. FDM Group, one of the UK’s largest IT graduate employers, is one of the first organisations to introduce game-based tests in its UK assessment centres. Andy Brown, commercial director at FDM Group, explains how technology is helping to identify the best talent for FDM’s careers programme... We are keen to take advantage of advances in VR, AR and gamification in our recruitment processes in order to help us identify potential candidates and help us continue to recruit as diversely as possible. Last year, we started the careers of


around 1,200 people from a variety of backgrounds and with a wide range of experience. We are truly global in origin and outlook, with employees from over 75 nationalities working together as a team. This diversity underpins our culture in which we value ambition, energy and people who seek challenges. At the same time, we want to give graduates an enjoyable experience when they come along to meet us, and, very importantly, provide them with feedback that can help them find the right role for them. Today, gaming is a part of many people’s lives, so introducing and using the technology that our potential employees are already versed in is a great way of helping them to relax, enjoy the experience and get the best out of them. Working with Arctic Shores, we


introduced a game-based verbal reasoning test that graduates play at our assessment centres. The test was introduced because we

found that graduates are not used to communicating in a business environment and they can fall down at this stage when they might actually have the skills we’re looking for. We can therefore develop a person’s communication skills if we know that they have the potential by using this type of test and help them understand how to do it more effectively in a business environment as we take them forward. Game technology such as this can


help to determine someone’s natural personality traits and create results that can then be matched against the known criteria for the role to help make the best fit. The game-based assessments we use are supplied by Arctic Shores and are based on scientific psychometric measures. The test collects over 3,000 data points that provide a detailed picture of a person’s aptitude and capability for a role. Using data in this way helps remove the element of unconscious bias from recruitment; data is blind to bias. Robert Newry, managing director


at Arctic Shores, says he has seen a significant growth in the number of companies introducing gamification as part of their graduate recruitment programmes. He believes that using the technology at the assessment centre stage can really help to test applicants and identify early on in the process who has the potential to succeed in a role. Following the success of this


approach, FDM is now looking to expand the range of game-based tests at its assessment centres. We haven’t limited our use of technology to this, however; we also provide students at careers fairs with VR tours of our London, Leeds and Glasgow academies and centres to give them a feel for the working environment.


The VR was designed and built by paid interns during their summer working experience at FDM. We use recruitment apps, such


as the Debut graduate recruitment app, which helps to remove the bureaucracy of job applications; the app allows employers to send direct messages to relevant applicants without sifting through numerous CVs, and applicants can even receive a push notification inviting them to the final round of assessment. In the UK, we recently introduced


an AR message for successful candidates in the form of a postcard, which opens a 30-second video message from CEO Rod Flavell. These are quite simple but


effective technologies that allow us to more easily target and engage individuals who have the necessary characteristics and interests that we want and need for our roles. n
