#9PercentIsNotEnough showcases women from all fields of engineering

improving how fresh water is delivered to developing nations. There are many areas of engineering that have a direct social impact or purpose. Or you could be a design engineer creating game-changing attractions, a structural engineer working on the most impressive buildings in the world, or even a broadcast engineer bringing quality YouTube content to life. And with little competition and excellent progression opportunities abundant in all these fields, you can be on your way to making history in no time. University provides you with excellent technical experience and sets you up for the physical and mental challenges that will come your way. But experience of working life is crucial, as communicating effectively is an everyday necessity for an engineer. When applying for engineering roles or graduate schemes, remember to show off your soft skills as you much as your know-how. And you don’t need to grow a thicker skin or change who you are to succeed as an engineer. All that matters is that you exude confidence and push yourself. Rebeca says: “Don’t feel intimidated just because it’s a male-dominated industry. There’s no reason why you can’t do it; when we have applicants visit us, we make sure there are women present as proof of this. I’ve seen women come in with a negative frame of mind of what to expect, and after spending time with us, their expectations completely change for the better. “You’ve studied engineering for a
reason, so believe in yourself. Attitude is everything – if you’re confident, you’ll do a great job.”
As for women role models – history’s full of them. Ada Lovelace played a critical role in the development of the first computer and wrote the first computer algorithm. Sound engineer Delia Derbyshire overcame adversity to be internationally recognised as the creator of the iconic Doctor Who theme. Even Queen Elizabeth II was a mechanic during World War II… There’s no reason why you can’t follow in their footsteps. n
