British Franchise Association appoints new PR executive
The British Franchise Association (bfa) has announced the appointment of Amy Winder as PR executive.
Amy is joining the bfa from the Horticultural
Trades Association, where she held the position of digital PR executive, with a focus on website management, SEO and media relations. She has previous experience in digital and copywriting positions and also holds a degree in advertising. Pip Wilkins, the bfa chief executive, said:
Over half of all UK businesses are now based at home
More than half (53 per cent) of all businesses in the UK are operated from the home, according to new research. The report, based on research conducted by the Centre for Economic and Business Research and YouGov, was launched to coincide with the introduction of the Home Business 100, a new list celebrating the UK’s home business community.
It calculates that home businesses are worth £94billion to the UK economy and the numbers are continuing to grow. There are almost three million home businesses in the UK, a 23 per cent increase in the last decade. Additionally, 42 per cent of the companies created in the UK since 2000 have been home businesses. The report also states that the estimated total annual revenue for UK home businesses is £212billion, based on an average annual

revenue of £77,000. Just under two-thirds (67 per cent) of these are run by men and the most common sector is IT and telecoms. The majority are also owned by people aged 55 and over (52 per cent). Simon Burckhardt, managing director
of Vonage UK, which compiled the report, commented: “In recent years, we have witnessed a huge shift in the UK economy, towards entrepreneurship and business ownership as an emerging norm. This research shows the critical importance of home businesses to the UK economy. “These businesses are an essential and
under-appreciated foundation of our modern economy. Right across the country and in a broad range of sectors, home businesses are creating value, supporting employment and giving people the flexibility to make a living on their own terms.”
“Amy’s previous experience within a trade association, and in digital content and media relations, makes her an ideal fit for the role. She’ll bring highly relevant skills as we prepare for the launch of the new bfa website, and put new strategies in place to increase the reach of the association on behalf of the sector. “I know the community will make her feel at home and will welcome Amy in her new position.”
Amy will start the new role in October,
reporting to the bfa’s external relations and training manager, Emma Wilsdon.
