Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance Fostering Leadership through Environmental and Energy Law and Business Law Programs BY KEITH PIERCE

The Program on Environmental and Energy Law, in collaboration with the Business Law Program at American University Washington College of Law (AUWCL), provides a versatile and diverse education that cultivates a deep passion for the environment and nurtures legal excellence. By emphasizing the principles of environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG), the program equips students with the skills to become future leaders who can effectively address the complex challenges at the intersection of law, business, and sustainability.

“AUWCL students are mission-driven, and this ESG programming will illuminate new pathways for them to create meaningful change with their careers,” said Dean Roger A. Fairfax Jr.

An Integrated Curriculum for ESG Competence

Through the Program on Environmental and Energy Law (PEEL) and Business Law Program (BLP), AUWCL offers a comprehensive curriculum that prepares students to tackle pressing environmental issues through the lens of ESG. The

program provides students with a solid foundation in domestic environmental, energy, and natural resources law, as well as international and comparative environmental and energy law. Furthermore, students explore critical topics such as environmental and climate justice, and animal law, ensuring a holistic understanding of environmental challenges.

“Students are combining the PEEL curriculum with courses in AUWCL’s extensive Business Law Program to develop high levels of proficiency in ESG leadership,” said Senior Associate Dean Heather Hughes.

Mentorship and Engagement for ESG Leadership

Recognizing the significance of mentorship in developing future ESG leaders, the PEEL and BLP programs foster a supportive environment where faculty, staff, adjuncts, and alumni serve as accessible mentors. These mentors offer guidance and inspiration to students, enabling them to identify equitable solutions to

complex environmental issues. Through mentorship, students gain invaluable insights into the practical applications of ESG principles, empowering them to become catalysts for positive change.

Program Events Driving ESG Innovation

Both PEEL and BLP go beyond the classroom by organizing program events that promote engagement with ESG principles. These events provide opportunities for students to connect with industry experts, policymakers, and practitioners actively shaping the ESG landscape. Conferences, seminars, and workshops facilitate meaningful discussions, knowledge sharing, and collaboration, encouraging students to think critically and develop innovative solutions to ESG-related challenges.

Leveraging Expertise for Sustainable Impact

With its rich expertise in environmental law, corporate governance, business law, and equity, AUWCL positions itself as a hub for ESG-focused education and
