When I was very much young er and certainly a whole lot fit ter, I spent a great deal of my leisure time crawling around underground passages, ex ploring the potholes of York shire.

dressed for these trips in the winter usually meant strip ping off in a field halfway up the fell with the wind whip ping around your knees and the snow threatening to snap offyour fingers. In the early 1990s, howev-
er, things began to lookup. One of our members bought a Mit subishi Shogun; abehemoth of a vehicle that was big enough to use as a changing room and which I, invariably, managed to take possession of. ' ■ What’s more, its go any where capabilities allowed
us to get closer to the mouth of the cave so we didn’t have as far to walk before we descended. Thus, I've-always had a
soft spot for the Shogun and was looking forward to driv ing the latest incarnation, re vamped in 2014 and the fourth
generation of a model first launched in 1982. Surprisingly, although it’s
smarter, safer and more eco nomical than the ones before, it isn’t as refined on the road as I’d expected and seems even larger than I remember it. The 3.2 litre diesel engine
is quite noisy and the'auto box makes a bit of a song and dance about changing up at high revs.

with a choice of manual or au tomatic transmission. Times haven’t changed a
great deal in the cabin: there is a bewildering array of small buttons on the dashboard and the steering wheel, while the plastics are as hard and un yielding as ever. One conces sion to the 21st century is a USB port, although as it’s lo cated in theglove box it’s not as accessible as it could be. It’s comfortable and pro
duces a relaxing ride with positive steering and an amaz ingly tight turning circle that makes parking far easier then anticipated. Parking is further aided
by the all-round visibility the upright windscreen affords, together with the rear view camera and parking sensors. The traditional seven-seat-
er long-wheelbase model has been joined by a three-door short-wheelbase model. Both come well specified with key less entry, climate control, twin, side and curtain airbags. Inthe long-wheelbasever-
