New base for region’s mountain rescue team

by Katie Hammond katie.hammond@jpress.co.uk Twitter: ©dithadvertiser •

The mountain rescue team responsibleforcoveringthe - RibbleValley has secured a new satellite base after more than30 years of fund raising.

Rossendale and Pendle Mountain Rescue Team will move into the new fit for pur pose facilities at Farrington Court, Burnley, which will be in operation alongside the team’s existing Clegg Street baseinHaslingden. RPMRT team leader Peter

Goble said: “We have long rec ognised that our Haslingden base is no longer sufficient for the size of team that we are now. We have vehicles that are parked outside and age prematurely as a result. We have fundraised to re place the whole of our vehicle fleet over the past few years and will now be able to store all the ambulances inside a t .. the new unit to protect them from the elements.” With call outs spread

throughout Burnley, Pendle, Blackburn, Rossendale and parts of Greater Manchester,

The Rossendaleand Pendle Mountain RescueTeam. (s)

having ambulances situated more closely to the M65 and other motorway links will mean response times to in cidents can be considerably improved. RPMRT chairman Andy

Simpson commented: “This is a very exciting develop ment and will improve the voluntary public service which we provide to the local community forfree, as well as securing the long term sus- tainabilityoftheteam.Weare not just a mountain rescue service - most of the public are not aware that we provide a search and rescue service throughout the area and are surprised when they realise they might actually require our services one day when they are out on an afternoon

stroll, or have an elderly rela tive suffering from Dementia that goes missing. We thank the public for all their sup port and hope this will con tinue into the future.” The new satellite base will

be developed over time as fur ther much-needed funds are raised. The first stage will in volve making the unit secure and ensuring it works for the team on an emergency call out and in an operational capacity. Further improve ments will then include the development of a training and education room and rope rescue training facilities. The new training area will

allow groups such as cubs, scouts and guides to visit to find out about the valuable work of the RPMRT, ensuring

the new base will be a com munity asset for the whole area. • RPMRT are appealing to

local or national companies for help developing the new base. Though they are not asking for cash, although this is always gratefully received, they would appreciate mate rials, equipment and labour to transform the industrial unit into a modern base that will benefit the community.

’ Though the team will be con tinually fundraising, it will tale time to raise the money needed, so the more support from local companies that the team can get, the sooner the conversion will be able to b e . completed. If you can help, please contact Victoria via jmiail,-press@rpnmtorg.uk

Pupils step out safely in high-vis vests from 3M

Children at Brennand’s Endowed Primary School in Slaid- bum are stepping out safely on the roads thanks to a gift of high-visibility vests from technology company 3M. The firm donated 30 high visibility vests to the school for the pupils to wear when going to and from school and on outings. They wore them on a sponsored 5km ’welly walk’ through which the school raised nearly £1,000 for the char ity Farm Afirica. Headteacher Mrs Charlotte Peregrine said: “There are only 33 families with children at the school so we were delighted the walk raised so much in sponsorship for the charity- it’s the most we’ve ever achieved. The vests donated by 3M

are absolutely fantastic and will be very useful. The village doesn’t have proper pavements and it’s so important that the children are clearly seen by drivers when they walking or cycling on the roads.” The suggestion that 3M could provide the vests came from Stuart McIntosh, supply chain manager at the company’s Upbrooks site, which makes valves and components for asthma inhalers. Stuart’s nine-year-old son, Andrew, is a pupil at the school.

After presenting the vests, Stuart said: “The school organ ises such a lot of activities for the children and it’s great that 3M was able to help."
