Jeremy Wade won his first winter competition at Whalley Golf Club with 28 points on Saturday.

He was “over the moon” and asked i f he could thank his playing part ners for the day, Stuart Andrews and Trevor Thornber, for their sup port. Clive Rees also had 28

Players were rewarded by bet ter-than-expected conditions, although the course was a lit- tie moist underfoot. ;

v All this was of little conse- ; quence to' Garry Davies, who

9 returned an outstanding 40 points over the shortened 16-hole winter course. The true measure,of the

fr-

quality of the win was that Garry’s score was eight point's clear of his nearest challeng

ers! Although eight points in

arrears, players were ganging up to take the scraps from the table with the finishing order of Jean VanBoeckel, Club Cap tain Peter Main, Garry Aston and John Berry all carding 32 points and only split by card . play-offs. ]

both teams carded 42 points. Wayne Ivinson/John

his club was still on its down stroke and the resulting air shot left at least onegolfer unamused! ’

New-look Blues unlucky on trip to Harrogate

Four fresh faces for Garner but Glitheroe suffer third successive defeat Harrogate RA................. .....3 COtheroe

............2-

A vastly-improved perform ance from the previous week end saw Clitheroe unlucky not to leave Harrogate with a point.-.

Four new debutants con

tinued Simon Gamer’s recent policy of blooding new play

ers in the team, with 18-year- old Cial Callagher starting at centre back, 17-year-old Bryn Potter on the right wing, and 28-year-olds Paul Coote and Matt McNamara spearhead ing the attack. •• The game roared into life

right from the kick-off. An early break down the left by the home side sawa snap shot across the face of goal ama2 - ingly hit both posts before bouncing to safety. Aminutelater, Garnerwas

beaten for pace and the for ward’s deflected shot nicked the outside of the post. But in the fourth minute,

three of the new boys com bined to help the Blues take the lead. A flick on by Potter on the right saw McNamara drive towards the bye line be fore firing a shot across the goal for Coote to stab home. With Bailey operating on

the left, Clitheroe had.two genuine wingers for the first time in weeks, and the move ment unsettled the home - side. On 18 minutes, McNa mara gathered the ball on the right, moved 20 yards in field and leathered the ball

Red team beat Green to go top

On target Ross Dent netted Clitheroe’s second in the 3-2 defeat at Harrogate on Saturday

from distance against the bar, Coote just failing to follow up the rebound. Ben Proctor was called in

to action on 38 minutes when a burst down the Harrogate right was followed up with a powerful shot.

However, two minutes lat

er, following a similar move, Proctor came out to save, but a rebound left him in no man’s land on the edge of his box, and Nathan Cartman curled the ball past him into the net. Half-time saw Ross Dent

come on for Bailey, and the home side came more into thegame.

But on 52 minutes, a ridic-

ulously soft penalty was given as a Harrogate player folded

himself round the legs of Gar- . _ ner for a penalty, which was

converted by Colin Hunter. . Hunter made it 3-1 with

17 minutes left with a sweet left-foot volley, before, in inju rytime, Dent pulled one back when he headed home a fine left foot free kick from James Walker.

Successful trial for Valley netballers

Ribble Valley Netball Club continue to go from strength tostrength.

After having a very succes- ful season in 2012/13, both in leagues and tournaments, a number of the club's girls attended trials for the Man- - Chester Thunder academy. With a huge amount of

players also entering for the trials, it was never going to be easy, but the Ribble Valley girls did themselves and the club proud by getting seven

girls into the academy. The girls have attended

all the Thunder training ses sions so far, and their will ingness to learn and put into match play the things they have been taught is a credit to them. In'the photo are Emma

Taylor, Brenna McPartlin, Lucy Halstead, Niamh Kay, Beth Tomlinson, Emilia Ro-

scoe and Isabella Whalley with Rachel Heniy, one of the Thunder coaches and Netball Superleague players (s).
