- talk entitled “Daffodil World” at Bolland Gardening Club’s first meeting of 2014- What started as a hobby
changed Ian’s life and became a passion. He has been show-
: ing daffodils for 40 years and giving talks about-them all over the World, for 25 years. . He plants bulbs in rows,
with grit underneath steri-: •Used soil, fertilised with pot-: ash and also in clean pots with limestone chippings in the
bottom,usingJohnInnesNo.3 with added sand and grit for drainage. After flowering it is important to allow the leaves to die down naturally to allow the bulbs to build up again for the next year’s flowering. On no account should the leaves be folded, tied or cut. If grown from seed it can
take up to eight years from sowing to flowering, so it is easier to start with bulbs. Bulbs of some newly bred introductions can be very
expensive. The RHS places daffodils in 13 divisions and he showed pictures of some from each.
Ian s talk led to members
asking many questions, after which the vote of thanks was given by Mr J. Ashworth and refreshments were served. The next meeting will be on Wednesday February 12th when Ruth Thurnhill will give a talk on the “History of the Gardens at Browshome Hall”,
followed by the club’s AGM. ’ Taking stock of Valley’s lost village Ken Geddes certainly gave his

. ly clear and detailed photo graphs from his many years o f recording land changes and any remaining traces of the building of the reservoir, some of which have by now disappeared. In 1911, during a very long
hot summer, Blackpool al most ran dry ofwater because of crowds of holidaymakers. The Tylde Water Board needed a more reliable source ofwater and settled on Stocks-in-Bow- land with the head waters of
^the River Hodder. There were not many people to displace,
and in 1911 tenant farmers were not considered impor tant! When one farming fam ily used hay to pack between their belongings on their cart, theBoard threatened court for stealing! They backed down when their meanness made thenationalpress. Between 1914 and 1918,
work was stopped so the Board concentrated on buying land and solving the problems of building a railway to get equip ment and materials to the site. By 1921, buildings at Stocks- in-Bowland had been demol ished and a temporary village built for the navvies. The building of the Dam Embank ment required steam engines to remove the huge amounts of spoil. Finally, in 1932, Prince
George opened the reservoir, which had cost of £3111. Towards, the end, Ken
showed slides of the Stocks area enhanced by serene mu sic, contrasting with the ear lier scenes of construction. Although the Fylde Water
Board was vilified for evicting tenant farmers, Ken proposed
they should be considered he roes for undertaking and com pleting such a huge, difficult, superb and much-needed en gineering feat - one of the first in the country to solve a water supply problem. The next meeting of Clit-
heroe Civic Society is 3rd February 3rd at 7-30 at RVBC chambers. “The History of the Victoria Cross.” by Tony Ormiston. -

Homes plan decision deferred
Residents in Sabden say they will continue to fight plans for new housing in Sabden. . An outline application for
a residential development of 14 houses and three bunga lows plus a new access road on land to the rear of Pendle Street East was deferred at Ribble Valley Borough Coun c i l ’s planning and. develop ment committee meeting on Thursday evening. ~ Councillors had original
ly opposed the controversial application submitted by P & D Developments by seven votes to three.
However, it was then de
cided more research into highways issues in Sabden was required by Lancashire County Council. Speaking after the meet
ing, Sabden councillor Rich ard Newmark said: “Traffic,
congestion is a mqjor problem in the village. “We have an award-win ning bowling club in Sabden,
which is situated opposite the' entrance to the proposed site. “This is a very important
leisure activity for villagers ■ boasting over 120 members and it regularly attracts play
ers from outside the town who drive to the facility. “There is also the popular
football club and the area is grid locked at peak times. “Residents will continue
to fight this application be-, cause i f the houses are built, this could attract a further 300 new cars in the Pendle Street East and Watt Street areas,
, which the village cannot cope with. •
“The development is on
. greenfield site and there is also the issue of visual amen ity that needs addressing.,” he added. - '
