It’s a girl thing... Three rising UK stars kiekstart The Grand’s
exciting folk and world music season by Matt Evans
www.thegrandvenue.co.uk Box office: 01200421599
Some of the leading lights of world folk and acoustic music will be appearing at The Grand intheweeksahead.
From the very best of Brit ish to the cream of the much- heralded African scene and the all-American polyrhyth mic guitar hero Andy McKee, it promises to be an inspir ing season for enthusiasts of acoustic music. It all begins with a sen
sational triple bill on Fri day January 31st when The Grand’s Acoustic Village night presents “ Womenfolk”, in as sociation with Root Music and Band on the Wall. This night features three of
the finest female talents cur rently creating waves in Eng lish folk music. Lucy Ward, at just 24-years-old, is one of the
youngest ever performers to be nominated for Best Singer at the prestigious BBC Radio 2 FolkAwards. Her debut album “Adel-
phi Has To Fly” was released in June 2011 by Navigator Records and was met with widespread critical acclaim. Lucy was named by MOJO as “Britfolk’s most vibrant and forthright new young talent” and attracted four-star re views from The Guardian and , Maverick Magazine among others. The Derbyshire-based
musician plays a number of instruments, including the ukulele and concertina, but it is her voice that has most stag gered audiences. Emily Portman shook up
the UK folk establishment when she scooped the “Best Original Song” award for the title track of her recent al bum “Hatchlings” at the 2013 FolkAwards. The Glastonbury
singer explores the darker un derbelly offolklore and ballad ry and audiences have been captivated by her beguiling and stunningly original ap proach to the folk genre. - Completing the bill is Em
ma Sweeney, by comparison a relative newcomer,, but what an entrance she has made with Her debut album “Pan gea”. Emma’s first vocation is that of a tremendous fiddle player, and she will no doubt enthrall the audience with vir tuoso celtic-inspired playing and provide the perfect coun terpoint to the singers she will
join on stage..- The following week (Sat
urday, February 1st), The Grand hosts a night of Lanca shire folk-rock featuring the county’s brilliant outfit Mer ry Hell, who feature a number of former members of 1990s rabble-rousers The Tansads. Their 2013 album “Head full of magic, shoes full of rain”,
