What qualifications do I need? To be an apprentice assessor you need to hold an NVQ for­ mal Assessor Qualification. You can complete assessor qualifications at a college or via a training provider. You will normally need access to at least two candidates to complete assessment practice in order to gain the qualification.


Any other requirements? I have hands on experience of working as a carer that has giv­ en me a good understanding of the roles I assess. This is an advantage but not essential.


How long does it take to qualify?


As an assessor, as well as gain-


ingfirst-handexperience.you also need to complete your own qualifications in your


- specialised sector before you can complete the Assessors course. This can take up to a year,but you must also ensure your own knowledge of your


' chosen sector are maintained after qualification.


What starting salary and package can you expect? Depending on experience the


average annual salary range for a health and social care assessor is £18,000 to £22,000.


What sort of personal skills make someone best suited to an assessor? I f you’re looking for a career with a variety of roles and re­ sponsibilities, being an as­ sessor offers these kind o f features.


What career prospects and' structure is there? Onceyou are qualified and ex­ perienced as an assessor you may be able to complete far­ ther training to become an internal or external verifier. This involves checking ex­ ternal organisations’ assess­ ment methods meet quality standards.


What job satisfaction can you expect from a career? Seeing candidates enhance their personal and techni- : cal skill sets and develop into their chosen roles offers great


job satisfaction. I get a real , sense of pride from knowing I have helped an individual or a group ofpeople with their pro- Sessional development.
