r ea d : . Gary Robertson, Turf Management for Lawnmaster i v v . - - '
^>in;;What qualifications do you need?
A prerequisite of owning a Lawnmaster franchise is holding a recognised profes sional sports turf and industry based qualification. There is a legal requirementtoholdpes- ticides spraying certificates, O coupled with a good under
standing of health and safe ty. Courses range from NVQ through toanhonours degree.
,^rAny other special 'requirements? Lawnmaster only recruit ex perienced turfmanagerswho have plied their trade either as a green keeper or a grounds
man. Most, like myself, have worked in many prestigious venues with the aim of bring ing that experience and rep licating that quality to the domestic market, it helps to be in reasonable shape and condition.
How long does it take to q u a l i l ^
Durationofcoursesyary mas sively, but for a recognised qualification, anything from 12
months to fouryears. ;
What sort o f starting salary package can you expect? Initial income is very difficult topredicLItisverylmportant
to build your customer base fast in order to reach a regu lar steady level of repeat work.
What sort o f personal skill
makes'someone best suited toacareer? . Communication and organi sational skills are key, but the willingness to work hard and understand the individual re- quirementsofeachcustomer..
Whatcareerprospects and structure is there? - . We have an extremely large postal area in which to work and you need to becoine the preferred choice for lawn treatment services.
What job satisfaction can you expect? Improving all and any type of lawn is satisfying, but the real deal is talking to a potential customer who really.enjoys their garden and appreciates being given that little bit of extra knowledge you possess.
M
Sell your profession. Turf management is a unique environment in which to work. I have never witnessed a profession that consumes your every thought in striving to produce the quality that you expect. Coverage is immense these days, particularly with sporting events.

Whalley GC Jiinior Captain Keiron Cunliffe prepares to drive in, watched by captain John Clegg, president Lorna Slinger, lady captain Wendy Green, familyandfriends. Under intense pressure,
Keiron hit a wonderful drive and split the fairway, with the finishing position sublime.
It was tight atthe top in Cljthe- roe Golf Club’s Four Man Team Event.
But t.wo birdie 4s on the
18 th for sixpoints put the win ning quartet of Craig Alison, Michael Dawson, Carl Drink- water and Paul Traynor into first place with 87 points. Four teams finished with 86 points, so scrutiny of the
cards decided the minor priz es. Seven points on the par five 13th was the highlight of the George, Houghton, Proos, Turner-team total as they slipped into runners-up spot. Norman Entwistle set the
ball rolling with a four-point-. birdie on the 1st to help the Brennans, Chris, David and Roger to 86 points for third place. Brothers Peter and Roger
Hargreaves took Dave John son and Keith Underwood on board and had the best front nine but needed one more point on the return leg to take home a prize. Simon Swindells won Divi sion One in a howling gale by
just one shot from the chas- ingpack. , . . Julian Troup with a bird ie two on the tricky 17th took
second place from Tony Mc- Gibbon who recovered from a blob on the 12th with a two on the 14th for 33 points and third place.
George Youngwasgolngno- where until a birdie and two
. pars finish put him fourth af ter cards with Ryan Ratcliffe Stuart Herd had a great
back nine to win Division Two with 34 points, atwoshotmar- gin over Ian Williams. ' A birdie two on the 5th
helped John Wetton to take third place and Richard Rudd won afive way play-off to claim fourth prize. Daniel PreedYs Eagle two
on the 6th was the highlight of his day but he had a mixed round and didnot figure on the prizelist.
Lady Captain Gillian Eddie-
stone is leading fi:om the fi-ont as she continues to pickup the prizes and she teamed up with Pam Lavery to win the Ladies’ Foursomes with 32 points. Sue Cartledge and Kath Lo- beU proved to be a formidable
■ partnership as they cruised into second place ahead of the delightful Diane Buttle "and Gath Podevyn after cards. "Val Fairless and Jan Revis'
finished fourth on 29. The Ladies’ Nine Hole Sta-
bleford was a triumph for Anne Hartley followed home by Elizabeth McEwan and Glenda Heahan. • , Sunday’s EWGA Medal was
almost a blow out but Carole Brown battled on to claim top .
spot ahead of Gath Podevyn by one shot.
