YOUNG Knives are sharpen
ing their instruments for their first visitto Clitheroe.
The group hooked listeners with their first album, “Voices of Animals and Men”, and have been delivering dynamic and eccentric music ever since. The trio - featuring Dart-
nell brothers Henry (guitar) and Thomas (bass) and Oliv er Askew on drums - landed a Mercury Music Prize nomi nation for their second album, “Superabundance”, in 2007. Young Knives will be wow
ing the Clitheroe audience with old material from their impressive back catalogue and some new tracks. “The New Musical Express
said that our vocals sounded like The Darkness, which I thought was a bit off,” said
Henry Dartnell. “We like Ad am and the Ants, Sparks and
Devo-they’re 10times cooler than The Darkness. “We like stuff that’s quite
English, but it’s people like Damo Suzuki who deserve acclaim, not people who are commercially successful. “He’s been on an endless
world tour foryears. He picks musicians from each city he goes to as his backing band and then shouts over the top. It’s all improvised and we en
joy that sort of stuff.” He added: “Some of our
songs are Krautrock, others are inspired byBeyonce! ” The Young Knives have
forged a reputation for ener getic live performances and their taste in tweed outfits! They began their musical
adventure playing covers of Ned’s Atomic Dustbin songs with their debut albuni pro duced by Andy Gill, the found ing member of punk legends
Gang of Four. “The Gang of Four have always had a big in fluence on bands like Franz Ferdinand, but they write finely tuned pop songs that are about as Gang of Four as the Tweenies,” said Henry. “Andy Gill is a great musi
cian andit’srefiiesfdngto work with people who are so enthu siastic about their music.” The Young Knives will ap
pear at The Grand on Sat urday, April 27th and will be supported by Clitheroe’s bright new things Urban Em pire and local indie band Tap estry.
' Tickets are £12 in advance

Village, featuring Hence The Tortoise, Dave Metcalfe and Thirty Seven Acres, will bring a breezy combination of folk- pop, traditional and contem porary folk to the theatre the day before-tickets £6 in ad vance.
