MiNE HOSTS: David Price and Chris Tinker, aiias Pricey and Tink, behind the bar of the Three Lions. Inset top, the distinctive pub sign with flag and inset bottom, Blackburn Rovers football memorabilia on display.
ciitheroe Advertiser &Tlmes,Thur8day, March 14,2013 -
Lions boozer in USA
THERE'S Boddingtons bitter and Newcastle Brown behind the bar,-bangers and mash ori the specials board and Premier League footy on the. big screen,
just like any English pub. The difference is, this is in
Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA, and its appreciative customers owe it all to a student soccer scholarship
. scheme from Ciitheroe Royal Grammar School 10 years ago.
1 After sixth forrn, pals David Price and Chris Tinker left the Ribble Valley to play soccer and
; study at university in the city one of America's major beer
brewing centres - and they liked the place.
‘ . .
• Now the 28-year-old pals are business partners in The
CAKE 11ME: David Price and Chris Tinker at their pub's second anniversary party.' -
, - '
I j; Three Lions pub in the city's Shorewood district, where locals and expatriate Brits alike flock to enjoy the atmosphere of a real English pub, hosted by "Pricey and Tink."
. They have just thrown a big
party for their customers to celebrate the pub's second anniversary, and they have plans to open another pub in the city and possibly a third in North Carolina. it all began when David and
Chris, along with Michael Collins, Ben Wearden and Oliver Young, went to Cardinal Stritch
- University in Milwaukee on a soccer scholarship from CRCS Sixth Form, after being recruited by sixth form alumnus Mark Chadwick, who was with.Burnley FC and now teaches at CRGS;
: Oliver and Ben returned after , the first year but the other three
. stayed on and graduated in 2007.
David went working in South
. Korea then backpacking in ; South East Asia before returning to Milwaukee to study for his Master's degree, while Chris stayed in Milwaukee to study for his Masters and married Jennifer, a local gjri; ; David and Chris teamed up again and managed a British-
. themed pub. The Britinn, which was destroyed in a fire in 2009.
T h e owner said he wasn't interested in reopening; so they decided to open their own pub. They found an empty
restaurant a block away, and with financial help from their families they converted it into - a pub with ample room for 150 customers, naming it after the famous three lions logo on England soccer shirts. David said: 'We wanted to

create a pub like home, that feels like an extension to people's

living room and incorporates all the neighborhood. "When we opened, we were
amazed at the number of Brits who came out of the woodwork. The Americans love the place too, for the British feel and atmosphere and the real British accents.'v ; The pub boasts lots of memorabilia from borne iriduding pictures of Pendle Hill and the Ribble Valley villages, Lancashire Witches, Hollands Pies posters, and Blackburn Rovers and Burnley shirts. ' Even the pub's logo was
designed to incorporate all the UK countries and has the . Lancashire Red Rose as the 'O' in Lions.
Football is a main attraction,
and customers crowd in to watch the Premier League and Champions League. David even organised a live Stype feed with The Delacy Arms at Whailey,
where he used to work behind the bar, during the England games at the World Cup. "We take pride in teaching the
Americans how to sing football songs," David said. Several ex-students of CRGS have joined the Three Lions
’
team. Luca Musker, from Ciitheroe, is the manager, Jamie Robertson, from Langho, is bar supervisor, and there's also Adam 9 Brown, from Whailey, and Aimee Puttock and Andrew Collins, from Burnley. . David said: "The accents have
really added to the authentidty of the place although, as we're northern, people often confuse us with Aussies."
. The pub.has aisp won a number of local awards • including "Best Fish and Chips in Milwaukee", "Best Burger on the Northshore" and "Best British Pub in the City" and David and Chris reckon their staff have been a major contributing factor to the success. The pub now has 29 staff and ^ last year topped one million dollars in sales.
” >,
. David added: "We've been amazed at how many Brits have sought us out and made us their local pub even though many of TS'i-'- them live at the other side of the ^ city or even as far as Chicago.
*
They come here because it makes them feel at home. "We are excited to represent
the Ribble Valley and hope ■ we can keep growing and letting people know about how beautiful our area is back home
and encourage them to visit on their trips to the UK."
