I THOUGHT everyone knew Kenneth Grahame's much loved children's story "Wind in the Willows", blit perhaps it is not quite as femiliar to the children of today. A. A. Milne, of Winnie the

Pooh fame, turned it into a play. Toad of Toad Hall, and then in 1990 Alan Bennett adapted it for the National

Theatre. He retained all the delightful animal characters and produced a script with his own inimitable touches of humour ■ and affection, i Sophie Gajewicz is a

charmingly naive Mole, Christopher Wright (another • favourite of mine) is excellent

as the precise, rather bossy Rat, who has a warm heart Robert Calvert is an amusingly grumpy Badger, plus an hilarious vignette as the Washerwoman, and Paul Barnhill is a wonderfully comic Toad, with a voice that occasionally has tones of Brian Blessed and the most incredible facial expressions. The whole

cast are first rate and I must give a special "man of the match'i award to Jason Furnival as Albert the lugubrious

. Horse. Two teams of Salford University Performing Arts students alternate to play . rabbits, weasels, wildwooders etc. Indeed.they play so many, parts I was surprised when the entire cast took their bow to discover that 13 people had created such . a variety of characters. However, great as the actors are,

Chris Honer, director, and Judith Croft, designer. The sets are amazing. We get a real sense of the River, the different houses, and an impressive array of devices, trains, boats, cars, coachs, caravans, barges and more. The costumes give a real sense of each animal without being obtrusive. My two "consultants", one of whom is going to be in a local production of Wind in the Willows at The Grand, were . thrilled with the production. There is plenty

u JAZZ will dominate Clitheroe again in May 2012

when the town hosts the third successive Ribble Valley Jazz Festival. Organised by the Ribble Valley Jazz and Blues

Club, the four-day festival is going from strength to strength, with next year's promising to be the biggest and best yet. The 2012 festival is built around the top

national figure of Clare Teal, who will perform on Sunday May 6th at The Grand, in York Street. Clare was the 2005 British vocalist of the year and is a radio presenter of some note.

She performs rhainly jazz standards, though

some originals and contemporary covers such as her notable "California Dreaming" often feature too. Her band is led by jong-term collaborator pianist Grant Windsor. ' Other events at The Grand include Chris

Bridges (trombone) "Liviqg Music Ensemble" on Saturday the 5th, preceded by a free workshop which explores the themes of improvisation and composition and is open to all ages and abilities. The concert itself is built around the well

known story "The Smartest Giant In Town" and is told via Mary Oliver's singing and narration, with instruments as the main characters.

The vibrant youth culture of Liverpool is represented by the excellent hard-edged

bebop of Marley Chingus at the Atrium Cafe in Clitheroe on Saturday evening, followed bya jazz/reggae fusion band, "Dub Jazz Soundsystem", that is sure to appeal to those who want to exercise those dancing feet. Kickstarting the four-day musical celebration is

Manchester's Ed Kainyek Quartet at the Atrium on Friday the 4th. A wide-ranging and versatile talent, who received a stariding ovation at last year's Manchester Jazz Fest; Ed (tenor and alto sax) will doubtless mix originals with standards

and even perhaps a little Grover Washington Inr tool

There's a proud history of live jazz in the Ribble Valley. Do you reognise anyone on this 1960s picture (left)?
