Tell us about disability benefit problems: CAB

A NEW benefit system currently being trialled in the Ribble Val ley could make a significant dif ference in helping millions of people across tne country.' Ribble Valley’s Citizens Advice

Bureau (CAB) is in a good position to influence the new benefit system being piloted in the area and wants to hear from local people as to how they are faring.' ,

' , “We have from now until early

next year to hear about any prob lems faced by local people as they are moved on to the new disability benefit called Employment and Sup port Allowance,” said local CAB manager Kafy Marshall.

' li! : ,•: ■’ I — . “What people tell us about the

new process could change the system for millions across the country, so we are very keen that they get in touch with us. We want to tell the benefit office about difficulties with this in troduction and they are keen to hear about people’s experiences. “If you fail the medical test, you

will lose the disability benefit and it takes a long time to sort but. The ap peal process is expensive.for the tax payer as well as stressful for the disa bled person. The Government wants to hear.how the system can be made fairer, better and therefore in the long run, cheaper, so we ask people to contact us.”

Information provided locally will

go a long way, as the Clitheroe-based bureau is working with people in the Government department respon sible for setting up the new benefit claiming process. : “We have the ear of the powers-

that-be at the moment, at project management level in the Depart ment of Work and Pensions, which is great,” added Katy. “We now need to hear from any

one who finds themselves stuck in the new system so we can improve it.

try next Spring. Speak to us and we hope that we can help you and also stop the same problem from hitting multitudes of others. Anything you tell us is confidential, as always with the Citizens Advice Bureau, but we will ask your permission,to re-tell your story without identifying you.” Anyone concerned about Em
