A YOUNG Clitheroe crick eter’s dream to tour Barba dos with Lancashire has been

backed by Bowker BMW on Trident Park in Biackburn; Sam Jackson, 12, hopes to

reach iiis sponsorship target of £1,400 and secure a place in the Lancashire Under 13s’ squad for a pre-season tour of Barbados next Easter. And Bowker BMW’s con tribution has helped the St Augustine’s RC High School pupil take one step closer to playing in the five-game tour. Sam’s, step father Simon

Coulter said: “Sam loves his cricket and has come on leaps Md bounds this season. But, • like all sports, the higher the level you play, at,-the more' expenses you can incur. - There’s travel, equipment,

CLITHEROE ‘ enjoyed a convincing win over Preston Grasshoppers 4ths at Little- moor on Saturday. . -With the pitch in perfect

condition and glorious weather to suit the crowd, the stage ws set for. some open, exciting rugby, and the locals didn’t disappoint.

■.

from Graves and - Edward Thornber,

After some good running, the i Hoppers -

defence slowed the ball down once too often for the referee’s liking and Peel stepped up to slot: the: penalty as Clitheroe - took the lead on 15 minutes...... Oyer the next 10 minutes

the battle remained very even, although Redfearn : looked home and hosed only to be dragged down short.

Tlie break came from Rigby, -

who, running off the.shoulder of Peel at standoff took a crash ball on a great angle and sud denly found himself in acres of space behind the defence.

.'The 35 metres to the tiy line looked a long \vay for the old

stager - but he. managed to scramble in, evading come last gasp, cover tackle on the way and Peel took the conversion well to move the score to 10-0.

Tills seemed to have Preston

on the ropes temporarily as Peel himself shimmied in after some good ball from the scrum was. passed out from slick- wristed scriim half Watson to the standoff, who. ducked and swerved in . his usual fashion and then converted his own - score to move it on to 17-0. From the restart there was

knock-on - which gave - the ' ‘Hoppers the advantage, and from the resulting ruck they won a penalty whicii; they duly took to claw three points back. This seemed i- to give

'

‘Hoppers renewed vigour, and ‘ they pressured, the Clitheroe line, but the excellent defence .' of Cowgill, Redfeam, Rigby :

and Sam Tliornber kept the visitors out.

Then as. the Maroon and Gold pushed into the strike

: Mne, they won a scrum just inside the 22 area, and in a

well-executed move from the' base of the attacking scrum, the ball was passed through three sets of hands before Peel touched down.

- The score moved on to 22-3

and the Maroon and Gold had effectively ended the match as a contest.

‘Hoppers continued to

hammer away at Clitheroe, who also sensed more points were on offer, but there were no more scores, although-it looked, like a faiiytale. end to the match as Railton L in his last game before a five-montlr world tour - lined up under

,a high, kick and dashed off in - style, but he was dragged down'

short of the line. " , This was an excellent per

formance from a strong squad and they can move on to meet Vale of Lune on Saturday. -

Garstang 3rds........... 19

Clitheroe 2nds............ 7 AFTER the disappointments in recent weeks of not play ing scheduled games, Clithe roe seconds were back on the: road at Garstang.

In the first half, Clitheroe

pressured the home side on numerous occasions, through breaks from veteran centre Mick Stott,- returning back Phil Parker and new boy Alex Robinson, and they were showing up well in the. tack ling department, especially from, the forwards and from-- new - recruit , Alex - West in particular.

Garstang were playing it

tight and constantly having; to kick the ball away to keep Clitheroe attacks at bay, with - Alex Hough, Mark Curphey and Aaron Atkinson making - great solo runs. Eventually the pressure told and Atkinson dotted down for a splendid tiy

to put the first .points on the board. ■ .Winger Walker came close -

to scoring a second try late in the first half but just missed out.

. However, soon after

Clitheroe were pegged back by a Garstang drive from a 5m lineout that culminated in an unconverted try." This took the game to half-time with Clitheroe holding a 7-5 lead. Half-time proved the undo

ing of the visitors as Garstang were able to bring on many fresh legs. Clltheroe couldn’t quite match the movement around the park from there' on and Garstang scored twice more to win. - -

Clitheroe .must take heart '

from this result and a run of 1 games for this relatively young , side, will no doubt see them rising up the league.

( On-Saturday, the side host

Bolton 4ths at Llttlemoor in an intriguing match up. Bolton lie fifth but have played one more . game than Clitheroe and have * only fouVmore points.

BLACKBURN AND DISTRICT BADMIN

THIRTY of Mytton Fold Golf Club’s Seniors enjoyed three days of golfing at Por tal Golf Club, Tarporley, Cheshire, playing on both the Championship and Pre mier courses. Day one saw the first round

of the Autumn Shield. Here. Malcolm Heyworth showed the way with 36 points on the 6,500 yard Championship course. Frank Havard and John Waimsiey squabbled over second place, both two points in arrears, and the former took runners-up slot on a card play-off. Harmony was restored

when the two were dratvn together to take the Secret Partners Team Award. Garry Davies took the nearest the pin on the 14th par 3 hole, finishing just 1’ 10” from the hole. Day two saw the second

round of the Autumn Shield and Heytvorth held on to take the overall win. Micky Walsh stormed through . to take the runner-up position. Garry Davies, Mick Walsh

and Dave Jackson took the team award and Heyworth was in the winner’s circle again, closest to the pin on the 14th. Day two also saw a close-

fought Frank Hargreaves Memorial Trophy competi tion. Walsh’s excellent 35 points took him.to the top of Division Two, while Club

.Captain Frank Hindle took Division One.

, Day. three saw the group play on the nearby Portal Premier Course. Players received plus points to their final scores, the size of their ; bonus dependent upon their performance over the previ ous two days; The final event - was, appropriately, the Andy : Capp.Handicap, and players dressed accordingly. Overall winner-: was •Norman Richardson (41.

points), making the most of a generous 14 bonus points. Just one point behind came Ted Bamborough who, with only six bonus points, couldn’t catch Norman. Bariy Hargreaves took the near- est-the-pin on the 7th and the secret draw team prize went to Dave Wilson, Barry Hargreaves and Gordon Watts with 105 points. The front 9 team prize went to Norman Richardson and Dave Wilson, while Ray Standring and Gordon Watts cleaned up on the back 9. _ Most closely fought-over

competitions of -the trip were the Pig and the Clown awards. Jim Bridge won Tlie Pig by

a convincing margin, having punched out his car’s wind screen when tiying to squash in a 12 fool drainpipe into an 11 feet 9 inches long hatch- backspace! Tlie Clown was more

closely fought over. Kevin Shanley was in the run ning, but lost out at the last, minute when Bill Whalley and Gordon Watts decided . to play the golf course in a different order to everyone else. This, just hours before the presentation - priceless! Many thanks to Bil!

Whaltey and his team. The ladies of Mytton Fold

held their end of season get -, together on Sunday. Several, new lady members joined in the competition, which was won by Allison NuttalL with Patricia Leyland and Gillian Pinder taking the remaining podium positions.
