Clltheroe Advertiser & Times,Thursday, October 21,2010 Kickb oxers have made the grade

KICKBOXERS at Clitheroe’s Roefield Leisure Centre un- denvent their first grading in front of former double British and European champion Sandy

The Muay Thai Kickboxing

Club at Roefield is affiliated to Mr Holt’s own club in Bolton, one of the biggest and best- known clubs in the UK.

There are lO Thai-Boxing

grades from 1 to 10 and each is graded at A to E, with A be ing the highest. All but one of the Ciitheroe students achieved A grades, with the remain der graded at B - an excellent achievement. Tony Bird, the Thai boxing

instructor at Roefield Leisure, is very proud of every student and feels they have progressed to a high standard, which was reflected in their grades. “Their performance was the

best I have seen in a long time and I can’t wait for the students to undertake their first competi tion,” said Tony.

“All the juniors who attend

Roefield’s Thai boxing classes are from Ribblesdale School and again I’m sure the teachers are just as proud of them for do ing well as we arc.” : : A fully qualified instructor

with 15 years’ experience in the sport, Tony added: “I think it’s

■ great to see people from the Ciitheroe community, both jun iors and adults, taking part in a - sport that builds discipline, self- awareness, confidence, self-de

fence, co-ordination and much inore. “Thai boxing can be used as

a non-contact form of fitness, which a lot of people also enjoy as part of keeping fit.” The classes at Roefield Lei

sure Centre include women, men and children and are held on Thursday evenings, juniors from 7 to 8 p.m. and adults from 8 to 9 p.m.

Club mining a rich theme

AL'WAYS an enjoyable event, this year’s “Theme” evening proved a winner at the Ribblesdale Camera Club.' It is a simple competition for montag- •

es and triptychs (a set of three pictures), judged by the members themselves. Not only photographic merit, but content is considered. In total, 16 entries produced 35 prints for this year’s competition. - In the montages “Sowerby Bridge Rush Bearing Festival”, by Christine Dickenson (reproduced here) proved a worthy winner oh 187 points, with John Fletcher’s “Skipton Horse Trials” sec- ono'on 183, while Clare Drew’s “Time- ' less Varanasi” received 170. The Triptychs were three prints on a

single theme, exhibited as a set. Nigel Mallinson and Graham Dudley were outstanding with 183 and 182 points respectively, Nigel’s “Holy Mackerel”, three fishing boats with Holy Island as the background, just pipping Graham’s colourful “Japanese Pageant”. There was a triple tie for third place

on 165 points, including prints by father and daughter Roly Lansdell and Sue Marsden..

MARVELLOUS MONTAGE: Christine Dickenson’s winning print of “Sow erby Bridge Rush Bearing Festival”.

SIXTEEN members of Ciitheroe Mountaineering Club stayed at the Low Flouse climbing hut in Con- iston during their late September weekend meet.

: - ' Despite poor weather on Saturday

morning, the highlight o f the trip was an underground exploration.of the Coniston copper mines led by' the club’s mining expert, David Tay lor. Starting from the Copper Mines youth hostel, seven members set'off via the open air museum to explore various leves of the mine workings,; datiuG back to the.l7th Centurv.:

Another group set out from the

hut in low cloud and pouring rain to take the Walna Scar bridleway to climb the summits o f Brown Pike, Dow Crag and Coniston Old Man, where surprisingly they encountered no other walkers on the way. Contin-' uing via Brim Fell, members headed down to Levers Hause, where the weatheV started to fair up.

• Climbing again via Great How

- Crags, the party reached the sum mit of Swirl How and detoured to the outlying peaks o f Great Carrs and Grev Friar before returning to

Swirl How to descend Prison Band' to Black Sails pass. A final ascent of Wetherlam preceded a lengthy.re- turn for-well-earned refreshment at
