New Euro laws to protect rainforest
FABULOUS HOLIDAYS
A EURO MP whose North West constituency includes Ribble Valley has secured a ■ major victory in a sbi-year cam paign halt the destruction of tropical rainforests. The import into Europe of
i i *
timber from illegal sources will be banned from 2012 thanks to a deal struck in Brussels and timber wholesalers have been warned that they will have to secure proof that the wood they buy has come from legally-managed sources or face the risk of prosecution.' .
■ Liberal Democrat MEP for the North West, Chris Davies, first tried to persuade the European Commission that timber imports should be banned in 2004. Illegal tree-felling is one of the biggest sources of deforestation on the planet. Huge sums of money are made by corrupt businesses that pay no respect to national laws. Builders often use the illegal wood without being aware of its origin, although some major DIY rclaffers now ensure that their wood comes only from sustainable sources.

Historic hike for
Ramblers SIXTEEN people joined Clitheroe Ramblers to brave threatening weath- er.and walk from Slaid- burn over Tenter Hill and then, via Myttons, Par- rock Head, Pain Hill and Grawshaw to Newton. TTiey were following the
directions given in John Dixon’s book “Historic Walks in the Ribble Val ley”, so they continued along the north side of the Hodder River to Dunnow Hall, to which Di,\on gives such a romantic history. The group then di verted in a south easterly
direction via Easington to a lovely bend in Eas ington Brook, where a picnic lunch was enjoyed, following on to Harrop Hall, which demonstrates interesting contrasts of ar chitectural styles. , Their route then took them via Langcliffe Cross, Field Head, Higher and Lower High Fields, and Bell Sykes, which has an ; impressive grinding wheel, to Holmhead Bridge. The final stretch of
walking was! to the im pressive Elizabethan Hammerton Hall and then back to Slaidbum. In fact, the group only expe rienced two light showers, nicely offset by sunshine from lunchtime onward.

by Faiza Afzaal
A CHEQUE for £350 has been handed over to a local charity to h e lp b ring a .sm i le to the faces of local children and young adults.
An enjoyable cheese

able them to hold a playscheme event for the children and young adults which Crossroads regularly cares for in the local community. During th e same
evening everyone was treated to some beauti ful singing by five young' girls from the Bethany orphanage in Tanzania, who are studying at Ac crington College. Strong links have

FUND-RAISING: Crossroads Care Ribble Valley is presented with a cheque for £350 for children and young adults in its care, (s)
Bethany Project and the Ribble Valley, through local churches. One of the residents
of Shireburne, Yvonne Fuller, who saw the en tire Bethany choir here last year; started a “5p For Bethany” project collection and decided to hold a raffle too. The challenges managed to raise a further £185 and the residents were so im pressed by the girls, they
decided they would like to do another project for the whole Bethany fam ily in Tanzania. Speaking after the
event, Yvonne said: “I would like to say thank to everyone who do nated prizes, money and their time to make this such a great evening for ajl the children and young adults, both here in the Ribble Valley and in Tanzania.”
