What qualifications do you need? You don’t really; I learnt as a kid but there’s all sorts of courses you can'
■ take these days. You can get an NVQ in chimney works. I have a City & Guilds in general building.
Any other requirements for example . health and fitness or age?
You’ve got to be fit, there’s a lot of work involved. It’s physical w o r k . . . . ,,
How long does it take to qualify for the role? The best way to learn in this job is by going out with a sweep. You do have a bit to learn, it’s technique. It’s not Just cleaning. You’d have a pretty good idea after ; ■ about six months going out with a i , , sweep. I was helping out when I was five; I would clean up.
What sort of starting salary and; package can you expect? About £200 to £250 a week. But it’s . seasonal, winter is your main time. In summer I do a bit of weed killing and, ■ power washing.
What sort of personal skills make
. someone best suited to a career? : You can’tbeatcommon sense. ■ Courtesy, as you’re working in people’s homes. You’ve got to be respectful o f ' people. You’ve got to have good communication" skills and a head for heights.
What sort of career prospects and structure is there? Most sweeps want to work for ■ - themselves. There’s not many sweeps employ a lot of people.
. You would learn and then go out on your
own or take over the sweep’s round, a ’ bit like a milk round. ^ ;
What kind of job satisfaction can you . expect from a career? : Last week I did one in Longridge and I .
■ got a bird’s nest out and it was a gas = flue. A postman came along and said,'-
■ you know, ‘You’ve saved somebody’s’ life’ . You can’t get better job satisfaction than that. ; • And chimney sweeps fetch luck. When ■ ■
; people get married, I get dressed up in Victorian togs and go and wish them: . luck.
In 50 words sell your profession? I think there’s big potential in the future, they are taking a lot of gas fires out and putting wood stoves in. ;.
- The technology is just going on and on. r I’d say fora young person going into it,/, it’s got good prospects. : -

IT’S not been a straight forward season for VVhalley.: , ; Captain - Richard .Palmer has
had to deal with a Jckyll and Hyde side that has performed well in the ■ 20/20 cup competition but strug gled to an extent in the league. ■ ^ Only Read stand Tn Whalley’s -
way of silverware this season as the Ribble’Valley rivals go head- ’ to-head : in. tlie 20/20- final on Monday, August 30th. • , However, in stark contrast, the
Station Road, outfit only: clam.-- bered off second bottom a t the ‘ weekend following victory against: Edenfield. Martin Davies top-scored witli
55 for the hosts in their 163-6 before Declan Fitzhenry exploded into action with the ball, claim ing 5-55 off 17 overs. Professional Kamran Younas aided his team mate by taking 5-46 from 21 overs. as Edenfield fell 38 runs short. - ■ Palmer said: ,|It, was. a good
confidence booster. It wasn’t nice beingsecond bottom.: - , “We are fourth bottom now but we are only 20 points behind fifth place Ba.\enjden. Hopefully we can start heading towards mid table now and gain some respect ability. We certainly don’t feel like we are one of the worst two teams in the league.’’ Wiialley come up against
Oswaldtwistle away and Cheriy Tree on
home.soil at the week end as they look to continue their climb up the table. Palmer added: “We always
knew if we could put a string of wins together against the teams around us we could move up. We are hellbent on not finishing in the bottom two.' '■ “If we win the 20/20 cup then
it would have been a reasonable season but we’ve got some win- nable games coming up so we’ll focus on them first.” • ■Elsewhere, Tn.- the Clitheroe
and District Bradlow Cup Final, Low Moor took the honours over Calderstones..
: ' ^ Low .Moor batted first and
scored 118-8’ with Andy; Booth and father Rodney scoring 30s. In reply Gary Keogh made 30 but didn’t get enough support and the Calderstones innings tell 20 short. In tire Sportswold Cup Final
Old Rimingtonians were asked to bat first and made 127-6 with • Peter Dibb and Steve Wlialley both making 30s. Nick Burton took 3-14 off five
oversand Simon Jones2-5. Sabden comfortably knocked them off scoring 12M. Rick Wright and Kev Lyons both made 30 retired and Jonny Ormerod made 28 and Phil Parker 22. Meanwhile Dibb took two wickets. - , . In League action Sabden have
been confirmed as champions fol lowing this week’s
re.sults. - - Cliipping A; couldn’t raise
a side and so conceded the game to Sabden and with Old Rimingtonians’ game ,at Calderstones falling victim to the weather this now means Sabden
have an unassailable lead at the top. In the week’s other, fixture
Chipping Ramblers moved up to third with a comfortable win over St James.-Ramblers made 133-8 with Proctor, Garth and Gatrell all making 30s. In reply St James only made 84-8 with Bennett making3J. ■:

IT’S phenomenal how the roles have reversed at Chat- burn Road. Clitheroe captain Peter
Dibb has transformed last season’s Ribblesdale League whipping boys into championship contend ers. In 2009, seven wins- and 15 defeats subjected the Ribble Valley side to a second-bottom finish. Now, in stark contrast, eight wins from the last nine games has seen Clitheroe move 19 points clear at the top and sb; games away from the

title. : Tim Le Breton inspired
his side to their latest vic tory as they beat Settle by 51 runs on home soil. His knock of 60, which included seven fours, was backed up by 23 from the skipper and a further 35 from sub pro Anwar, All. Chasing -187, their opponents never really stood a chance- with the bowling prowess of Ali, who took sensational figures of 6-24 off 10.5 overs.:

wickets while Ali Haider took another. Dibb said: ‘‘It was
another good result for us and that now puts us two wins clear. The games we’ve got coming up are tough games so it’s still in the bal ance. We’ve just got to keep going. I said that I wanted a 20-point gap going into the final six fixtures and we’ve
"got that cushion now. “But there’s sbt games left and it’s still game on. -It’s nice to be up there, but
I’m just hoping Padiham beat Read on Saturday and then we beat Padiham on Sunday. That would be the best scenario, and if that happens I’d like to think that we wouldn’t mess it up from there because it would put us in a great position.” He added: “If we win
twice at weekend then we can start looking at winning it, but we’ve still got it all to do yet. There’s hvo massive games for us at weekend and Padiham on Sunday is as big as they get.”
. The Whalley Road side face two tough tests with a trip to the Arbories to play second place Padiham on Saturday before entertaining neigh bours Ribblesdalc Wanderers on Sunday. Victory for Chris Holt’s third place outfit at

the weekend and - defeat for Anthony Hall’s Padiham closed the • gap between the ; two rivals to just two points. - Eastham said: “This is a-
massive weekend for us. We can ultimately decide whether we will be in the mix for hon- ■ ours or whether we will be out of the title chase and just hoping for a Lancashire Cup
spot. . , ■ “Tlie weekend really is the
biggest of our season. Padiham are two points in front of us so if they beat: us then they will
•go clear, but if we beat them then it’s game on.' However, if Clitheroe win again then it’s out of our hands.” However, despite the pres
sure-pf the weekend’s games, Eastham is confident - in his captain’s - ability and : is ada
mant that his side will still be involved come Sunday evening. He said; “Chris Holt is a
great young captain and he’s successfully gelled all the lads together. “He has made use of the
experience that we have among the squad and he will keep us together as a unit so we can battle on.” -

BEAMING Ribblesdale Wanderers captain Ian Brit- cliffe thinks it’s fantastic to see local sides dominating the top four in the Ribblesdale Cricket League. 'Hie Church Meadow skip
per declared that this sea son’s campaign had been an outstanding advertisement for cricket in the Ribble Valley as Clitheroe, Read and Wanderers all battle it out for league supremacy. Britcliffe’s side recorded a
comprehensive seven-wicket win over neighbours Salesbury at the weekend which saw them move back into the luxury and prestige of the top four. David Howard was in phe
nomenal form with the ball as he recorded figures of 7-37 off 19 overs while Robert Lloyd added a further three wickets. In reply, chasing their oppo

nents 117, Lloyd top-scored with 53 as Whalley strolled past the finishing line with more than 21 overs to spare. Britcliffe said; “We are in
the top four again now. “They were 50-1 at one
point but once we’d got into them we had them out for 117. “Richard Rostron is a great
professional and a real grafter and he helped steer them on. “But we bowled and fielded
well and it was a great result. “But to look at the top four
is great for the league. “It’s great that we are all
there and we’ve still, got to play Read and Clitheroe. “I’ve really enjoyed being
involved in the league this year. “Tlie spirit has been great
and I just want that to con tinue for the final sbe fixtures.” Wanderers: play host to
Great Harwood on Saturday before they travel the short distance to face rivals Read on Sunday. Britcliffe added: “If we can
have more wins than losses at the end of the season then it- will be fantastic. “We are in the top four and
that’s where we are wanting to stay. “The atmosphere among
the squad has been fantastic this season; they are a great bunch of lads and we are all absolutely loving it.”
