DONATIONS: Just a selection of the toys so generously donated to the 2010 Toy Appeal, (s)
ONCE again, we have re- they have still responded'to ceived a fantastic response to our annual Toy Appeal, run in conjunction with the Salvation Army.
■ In the appeal’s seventh year, we have yet again witnessed the massive generosity from Clitheroe and it’s surround ing communities and we’re so very grateful for the difference to many childrens lives across the Ribble Valley, made by the large numbers of donated toys. People have contributed in
those more in need of help than themselves. It’s been truly up lifting.” “We have also seen a particu
larly high standard of gifts be ing donated. People have given real thought to what our fami-
■ lies might need and some of the more useful examples have
whatever way they could over the weeks of the appeal and it has resulted in a wonderful re- ■ sponse for the 2010 effort. . ■ ; • Capt. Elizabeth Smith o f the
Clitheroe branch of the Salva tion Army said: “In truth, we were worried that this year’s donations may be affected be cause of the ongoing economic crisis facing families from all backgrounds.
. “In past years, we have relied ■
on their generosity, but with household budgets already be ing stretched to the maximum, we thought people may have to hold back on the help they : have so generously given us in the past. In fact, this has not been the case at all and we have seen one of our most successful. years ever as far as donations are concerned. . V “It really shows that people
have made even bigger, sacri fices to help others and that’s even more touching to us as
' included 10 lunchboxes which we have filled with chocolate from a separate contribution. We have enough gifts to ensure every name on our list gets a main present, a book, a soft toy and an assortment of stocking
• fillers. That’s a real result.” i Today and tomorrow are the last days that donations can be
'accepted in order that the toys can be effectively distributed to the families they are destined for, so that they can be wrapped and ready for their new owners on Christmas morning.. ; Toys can be dropped off at the Clitheroe Advertiser and- Times offices in King Street, Clitheroe, or at the Salvation
, Army shop in Lowergate. • Names are still being taken
for the Salvation Army’s Christ mas Day lunch. Capt. Smith explains: “We are appealing to people who are going to be on there own when they don’t need to be. The lunch is a lovely, happy occasion and everyone who attends really enjoys them selves.” Anyone wanting to at tend the lunch can ring Capt. Smith on 07709 351394.“

MAJOR-Clitheroe town ac cess route, Pimlico Road, ■ will be closed for up to ten weeks, says -Lancashire County Council’s highways .
department. The road will re-open over;
the Christmas period, but will : - ihen be closed again to allow.: for a full replacement of the railway bridge. Pedestrian ac cess over the bridge will be maintained at all times. - ■ The rebuild is a joint project
between Lancashire: County Council and Network Rail and is necessary as the current structure does not match EU legislation which states th a t ; bridses must be caoable of car- ’
tying lorries up to 40 tonnes in weight. The Pimlico bridge cur rently carries a weight restric tion of 7.5 tonnes. Keith Lumley, spokesman for
Network Rail said: “Work is due to be completed in mid to late March. The disruption caused will .be kept to a minimum at all times, hence re-opening for convenience over the Christmas period. The work is completely necessary to ensure the bridge meets safety standards and a signed diversion route will be in operation for the duration of the project.” . Pimlico Road will be. re
opened on Thursday, Decem ber 23rd and v\ill close again on Monday. January 10th.
