WHILE many people might be sick of the sight of snow this year, moun taineers love the stuff and next Thursday Clitheroe Mountaineer ing Club will once again play host to one of the best. Tom Richardson, pic tured, will give an illus-

“Judgement Days” and he says of it: “Moun taineering is as much as anything about making judgements. In 2009 I had been visiting the Himalaya for 30 years. It was a year in which mountaineering judge ment became even more important than ever.” Tom’s talk will start at

Mountaineers enjoy a festive dinner

FORTY members of Clitheroe Mountaineering Club attended the annual Christmas dinner weekend, based at the Convention Centre in Keswick. On Saturday morning a

group of 20 set out in rain, with forecasts of better weather to come, along the Cumbria Way to the car park at the foot of Latrigg for an unrelenting climb to the summit of Skiddaw Lit tle Man. Members experienced a

brief respite from the bad weather, before gale force winds sprung up, blowing the rain horizontally from behind.

■ ■ After a slight descent,

members trudged over melting snowfields to climb the ridge up to Skiddaw’s main peak, where there was little shelter from the icy blasts of the wind, causing ■ members to swiftly-leave the summit to find a shel tered place to eat. . . - ’ ■ For. some this involved:

descending the south ridge and then heading north

east to the shelter at Skid- daw House, before return ing -via the Cumbria Way to the centre, while others retraced their steps to the car park and then climbed Latrigg on their way back. On Saturday evening

members enjoyed a four- course communal meal, planned and prepared by the club’s retiring chair man, Brian Davies, assisted ■ by Jane Pyzniuk and Dave Grosvenor, and an army of volunteers. The new chairman for

' tions were also thanked for • their contributions. V

2010, Ian Grace, thanked Brian for his delicious roast beef dinner and for the con tributions he has made to . the progress and develop ment of the club during his term of office. Members who provided starters, desserts and table decora-

. A special award of a fly ing monkey toy was pre sented to George Wosten-

ous evening’s festivities, members set out on Sunday morning from Little Town, in the Newlands valley, to climb Dale Head ■via.Dale- , head Crags. Due to the pre vious day’s heavy rain it proved impossible to ford Newlands Beck, so a path was followed to Dalehead. Tam, where the east ridge of Dale.Head was climbed to the cairn on the summit. Here, buffeted by strong

ter climb in the Cairn gorms, and for the impres sive progress made in his rock climbing ability over the past 12 months. Condo lences were also expressed to new ■vice-chairman Bern Hardman, whose garage set on fire as he was setting off for Keswick on Friday evening, depriving mem bers of his entertaining, gui tar-accompanied songs. Unaffected by the previ

winds, but with excellent views of the surrounding . peaks including a now snow-free Skiddaw, the group followed Hindscarth Edge to reach the summit

shelter on Hindscarth for lunch, before heading north above High Crags to return to Little Town.

• At the club’s recent annu al general meeting, the retiring chairman, Brian Davies, paid tribute to Valerie Grooby, who was stepping down from her role

■ as hut booking secretary and weekend meets co-ordi- nator after 10 years of serv ice. I t was also noted that the

membership now stands at 69 people, with prospective new members regularly turning up a t monthly, indoor meetings. Humphrey Johnson, the

indoor meets organiser, out lined the programme of speakers and topics fo r . 2010, including a visit in January by high-profile, Himalayan mountaineer and equipment re'viewer for Climb magazine, Tom Richardson, who -will deliv er ah illustrated lecture entitled, “Judgement Days’’ (see article above). ' Further topics include

\

scrambles in Scotland, an expeditiori to northern Peru, an ascent of Mera Peak, a traverse of the Sier ra Ne'vadas and the geology of mountain glaciers. Non members are always wel come to attend these meet ings, which take place on the third Thursday of every month (except July) at 8 p.m. in Clitheroe Cricket Club. The club’s last outdoor

meet of 2009 was an ascent of Scafell Pike on Thursday, December 31st. Inquiries about the club can be made to Nick Millward on 01200 441346.
