■ THIS is the first time I have written a let ter to the papers, but reading last week’s “As I See It” article by Richard Shorras,
. headed “Wliy so negative?”, my blood started to boil. Is this man an elected representative
for Ribble 'Valley Borough Council? I do hope so because that means next May we
. can get rid of him and elect someone who acts for the people of this borough.
■ I would like to know who the people are who have given such a thumbs up to the urbanisation of this lovely rural area. How many people did you survey Mr Shcrras? How many replies did you receive and where do these people live? Come to that Mr Shcrras, where do you
. live? Are there plans to build a housing estate on your doorstep? Not to mention, as you say, some of these reports are sev eral years old, doesn’t this suggest they may be out of date? I’m sure there were little ads in the
Public Notice section saying you were inviting views on various strategies, go to your \vebsite, which apparently it now ap pears is defective, but most people lead busy lives and such low key advertising passes them by. It is only this year that people have
woken up to what is happening in their area and they do not like it. To write these people off as distrustful, jaundiced and negative is to totally miss the point and in some way attempt to place yourself above
: these people, that you are more informed and these people ignorant oiks. These are normal, intelligent hard
working people who moved to the Ribble Valley for a quiet, relaxed, less crowded way of life. Maybe housing is dearer here,
. but these people worked for what they liave and deserve to be heard not over ruled like rowdy schoolchildren. . The truth is your Core Strategy has been totally overshadowed by the pin pointing of land which COULD be built on. Developers take COULD to mean CAN BE. If a developer has a choice between an urban piece of land in say Burnley and a rural piece of land in the Ribble Valley, he will choose the Ribble Valley because he can get far more prof it per hectare here and so we now have building project after building project hit ting us. Your Core Strategy is a useless piece
of paper, we all know these people have big money and they will find a way to get round every planning issue you place in their way. You have opened the flood-

_ gates to hundreds of houses, thousands of extra people to use the services you have pinpointed as being available, when they
. are at maximum capacity. Oh yes, somehow they will cope; The
schools will cram in more pupils until our schools are rated the worst in the area in stead of the best. Those that can’t get a' place will have to travel to schools outside the area, not very environmentally friend ly but hey, never mind! ' ■ Our doctors will have full waiting rooms, where you will be waiting an hour for your appointment because they have . had to shorten the consultation time. Our roads will be constantly choked instead of
. only choked at peak times, but hey isn’t every town the same? Our streets will flood and pollution -
from more traffic will rise. . . ; ■ People who live here love this area
they are speaking to you,
begging.you not to allow this to happen.-Listen to them, donit write them off as “some people” ' start to realise they are “most people” Please before our towns and villages are ■ destroyed!

THANK YOU Richard Sherras, Chair man of Ribble Valley Borough Council’s planning and development committee, for pointing out to many hundreds of Whal- ley residents, what a bunch of “resentful, prejudiced, biller, distrustful, jealous and - negative people we are-your words-see
the definition of “jaundiced”. ■\Ve must all be wrong and indeed, hive
lost siglit of the fact that “the draft core strategy consultation is asking for views on mere suggestions and nothing is being forced” upon anyone. Well, Mr Sherras, remember this
- time will tell. Regarding the gathering of evidence over the years, having lived in the main area of the village, where traffic congestion and flooding occur most, for over 25 years, I have no knowledge of any
- of my fellow neighbours being consulted on these matters. Shameonyou and your well-informed,
patronising team, that we, the local resi dents, have not been a part of your “mass es” of evidence gathered over tlie years. So who has? Name names, or have these also been a “test”, along with the recent objections to proposed new building projects?

food, great entertainment and most im portantly, lots of money raised for a great cause. Well done to all concerned.
SEEING the photographs of the Chat- burn bombings during the Second World War, I recall my grandfather telling me a story of his recollections of that time. He worked at the Horrocksford Lime
Company as a shot firer. My grandfather and a few of his workmates walked into the village to see the damage. While kick ing about in the debris, he found a roll of
ten shilling notes (he presumed from the Post Office). My grandfather, had however, when I
questioned him, handed the bank notes to a policeman.

I READ with interest, the story of the day the bombs fell on Chatburn. I was employed ,at Salt Hill Quariy as a
. horse man and had to work a large white cart horse and care for a smaller riding horse that belonged to Mr John Carter
Burton, the owner of Salt Hill and the Bellman quarries.
" On the day in question, the Bellman
quarry had a problem. The quarry was set back about a mile from the plant that processed the lime rock and the rock was transported across the field By a small die sel locomotive; but this day, the locomo tive had broken down.
over from the locomotive. My horse could pul 20 small wagons, with 200lbs of lime rock in each across the field on a small gauge track to the plant. It was on one of
- I was sent with my cart horse to take
these journeys that the fun began. I was half-way across the field with my
horse and wagons, when I heard the roar of an engine and in an instant, the roar was upon me. It was a twin engine plane with German markings. I could see the pilot, his face and goggles. Tlie plane flew on over the Bellman and Oxford plants, then turned right and on to Chatburn. I did not see the plane after that, but heard the bombs as they fell on Chatburn. I could not leave my horse and go up
into Chatburn, but as I was returning to the Bellman quarry, many of the men who worked there were going on foot. I had previously enlisted in the RAF
and soon after the bombing, I was called up for duty and remained therein for the next six years. In 1949,1 emigrated to the USA. - In the next 60 years, I must have re
turned to Clitheroe a score of times, each time driving througli Chatburn and remi niscing about the past. I love Clitheroe and would like to say “Hello” to anyone who remembers me!
WILLIAM S.HINDLE, Crawfordville, Florida
Why two Mayors?
I HAVE for many years wondered why we have a Ribble Valley Mayor and a Clitheroe Mayor?
Surely, in this economic climate, this
borough could make do with one? What docs it cost for eacli of these ap
pointments in allowances, transport and other expenses?'Someone at the council offices must know. Once again, it will be costing the rate payers. By only having one mayor for the area,
would the savings not be considerable? Let the cuts start here. NAME AND ADDRESS SUPPLIED
like Beirut now IF any of you can remember what Beirut looked like during both the war and after, then why not take a look at Trapp Lane, in Simonstone, and see for yourselves the desolation that is going on there. And there is more to come. All this

must stand alone I AM dismayed at the idea that in future Britain will be part-sharing its Armed Forces with France. It has been announced by the Minis
try of Defence that we will be sharing, amongst other things. Aircraft Carriers, the training of Rapid Response Forces and training facilities with our neighbours over the Channel. However, it does not take a genius to
see that this proposal is not only an attack on our sovereignty as a nation state, but that it is also a very dangerous develop ment.
Surely our experience of the Falklands
War, when the French refused to supjDort Britain in taking military action against the Argentinian invaders, tells us that they are not suitable partners. I also fear that this could indeed be slip
pery slope towards a further pooling of our Armed Forces which, in my opinion, could possibly leave us in a perilous posi tion in the event of any future conflict. • Nelson and Wellington would be turn
