Top marks for Ken!

THE judge did not find too much favour for some of his marks when Ribblesdale Cam era Club viewed the Inter- Club Photographic Alliance’s colour print folio. The ICPA - a grouping of

i Is

about 15 camera clubs in East Lancashire and north Man' Chester - runs annual competi tions, showing the whole entry in their folios. This brings the advantage of being able to see the overall quality of the region’s photography, but also makes for a long evening. Rib blesdale came mid-way, placed seventh in this competition. The best mark for the local

club was given to Ken Geddes’ “Winter willow with speed skater”, scoring 17. out of 20, but Sue Marsden’s. “White Tiger” was close behind on 16. The lowest mark received by a Ribblesdale member was 13, by no means the lowest in the competition. N ex t week, on February

9th, members Stewart Clark and Raymond Greenwood will show some of their two-and-a- quarter inch square colour slides. For enquiries about the club, contact 01282 779167 or 01200 423474 or go along to a Tuesday evening meeting at West Bradford Village hall, starting at 7-30 p.m. Keen photographers of all ages, experience and abilities are welcome.

A YOUNG, sWer who took his first ten tative steps on the dry slope overlooking Clitheroe has been chosen to represent Great Britain at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver later this month. Dave Ryding, who now lives in

Bretherton, near Leyland, first strapped oh a pair of skis at Pendle Ski Club when he was just six.

Now a multiple British Champion at

the age of 23, he will compete in the Men’s Slalom and Giant Slalom events in Vancouver, Canada, on February 21st and 27th.

■ On his website, Dave writes: “When I

was six years old my father Carl, a ski- mad lifelong enthusiast, encouraged me to take lessons at the local dry ski slope near our home - so I joined Pendle Ski Club.

A single fixed monthfy payment covers:

Rent “In fact he gave my sister and I a real

ly good incentive to get involved. If we achieved a good basic level, he told us, he and my mum, Shirley, would take my sis ter and I skiing on real snow! “By the age of eight I was whizzing

down the slopes at the French Alps resort of Samoens like a natural.” Dave’s progress has continued at a

' pace; he was selected for the English Alpine team in 2003 and became Euro pean dry slope champion the following year. By 2006 he was Slalom, Giant Slalom and overall British Alpine Junior Champion and was selected for that year’s British Alpine Ski team. In 2007 he became English Giant

Slalom and Slalom Alpine Champion and the following year was British Slalom Champion and runner-up in Giant Slalom and Super Combined. Last year he was British Slalom and

overall British Champion, runner-up in Giant Slalom and third in Downhill and Super G.

But his constant dream for the past

few years has been to represent Great Britain a t the Vancouver Winter Olympics 2010.

Commenting on his selection he said:

“I am so proud to have been picked to represent Britain in the Slalom and Giant Slalom disciplines. “Since I was picked for the junior

British training squad at 14, I have dreamed about this moment. “I would like to take this opportunity

to thank my family, friends and all the British skiers who have taken part in fund-raising. "“It’s been a hard few months leading

up to the Olympics, but there’s nothing in the world to beat that adrenalin rush— I can’t wait.”

Scams cluster is a bad lot

PEOPLE are being warned about several scams and possible unfair practices blighting Lancashire at the moment. Each of the activities listed below has

resulted in calls to Lancashire County Council’s Trading Standards Service, which is warning people to be on their guard against anyone trying to rip.them off. . '

. '

; • In Ribble Valley and Rossendale i. consumers have complained that a cold {"caller has phoned saying he is sorting out

. t their computer problem when they have not reported one, and then asking for personal and financial details. Never give out such details, which can be used to steal money from your accounts.

, • In Ribble Valley and other parts of ; the county, con men have been calling

T residents and claiming to be from the ; local council. They say that the resident’s house has been over-rated for council tax, .that it is being dropped a band and hence

a refund is due, and that the consumer needs to give his or her bank details so that the refund can be given. Needless to say this is a scam, and residents are being strongly warned about these calls. • In Rossendale a company claiming

to be based in India is cold calling resi dents by telephone and claiming to be collecting income tax. Discounts are offered for agreeing to;pay over the phone, and bank details are requested. • Elsewhere in Lancashire, burglar

alarm salesmen have been cold calling b y ' telephone offering free alarms to resi dents and discussing the crime problems in the respective districts to persuade the consumers to agree to survey visits. While the alarms may be free, consumers sign up to expensive service agreements which may last several years and cost thousands of pounds.

: • Finally, there are reports of a com

calling consumers and offering to claim back mis-sold payment protection insur ance or bank charges. Credit card details are requested and amounts then taken from accounts. Be aware that anyone giving card details over the phone may end up paying more than anticipated. There are proper free channels to investi gate overcharging and mis-selling; firstly complain to the bank, and then to the Banking Ombudsman if the response is unsatisfactory. The strong advice from the Trading

Standards Service is to never to give out personal bank details in response to an unsolicited call or mailing.
