Happy Hammond hits sensational

JOHN Hammond shot a s en sa t io n a l n e t t 64 to take this week’s Winter Series Singles on a very frosty Mytton Fold golf course. Using the shortened 16

h o le course and winter greens, Hammond shot an outs tanding 64-20-44, - -smashing the club’s winter

-course record by several strokes. D e sp ite behind .seven

shots in arrears, Jim Bridge was still delighted with his second placed 77-26-51. Close on his heels were

Graham Plant (71-19-52) and fourth placed Mick Walsh (75-23-52), only sep-

. arated by a card play-off. Despite being away for a

three week holiday, Garry Davies still heads the Win ter League, but by just six points ahead of a closing MickKelbie.

ONCE again, Saturday saw both of Clitheroe's rugby teams kicking their heels, as frostbound pitches halted any chance of action." With a backlog of-matches to

squeeze in before the end of the season, the first team, will be hoping to climb

back; towards the summit of Miller Homes 3N. ‘ • An excellent team spirit was being

forged before the series of postpone- fflents, with the likes of Oily Green-

FRUSTRATION: Both of Clitheroe’s teams saw their games postponed again at the weekend Rugby union

Meanwhile the second team, known

wood, Joe Basquil and young Tom Red- fern bringing an extra dimension and pace to the team. Injuries to two key players - fly hah

Nathan Peel and flanker Simon Cowgill - have now cleared up, with captain McEntyre having a fully fit squad to choose from when they host Kirby Lonsdale at Littlemoor on Saturday (kick-off 2-30 p.m.). .

as the,Cavaliers, have been doing rather- well under the leadership o f Simon Rawstron. With a team of mixed ages and abilities, there have been some notable -victories including the double over local ri-vals Burnley. But what has been most impressive is

the way some have moved up to senior rugby, with the commitment of the likes of Matt Bleasdale, Mark Piercy, Sam Thornber and Mathew Stevens more than encouraging.

The skipper is quietly confident of a

sucesfull second-half of the season but is cautious about lack of game time and lost momentum. New recruits are always welcome,

even if you have never played before - Tom Redfearn had never touched a rugby ball before September, bufsome star displays for the Cavaliers led to a well deserved first team place. For more information - see the
