the 16-year-old cycled and then walked to investigate, at the same time calling the farmer on his mobile phone. He got within 10 feet of the car
before calling his dad, who picked him up and the two of them fol lowed the car, eventually guiding the police. They arrested the driver, who:;
and saw a man recovering a mountain bike and a chainsaw from under a bush. Sensibly the teenager retreated

A TEENAGER whose vigilance and presence of mind resulted in the arrest of a prolific offender has been praised by Kibble Val ley’s senior police officer. The teenager turned detective
\ s Michael John Haggerty (49), of
Powell Street, Barnoldswick, pleaded guilty to handling stolen goods. He was made subject to community supervision for 12 months and ordered to pay £85 costs.

said financial difficulties had been behind the offence.
“He has already spent three
days in custody as a result of his actions,” said Mr Bakhat. The stolen property has been returned to its owner.. Commenting on the case, Lan
cashire Constabulary’s Geo graphic Inspector for Ribble Val ley, Insp. Chris Saville, pictured, was full of praise for the vigilant teenager.
“Young people these days can
sometimes come in for unwar ranted criticism,” he said. “This young man’s public-spirited actions, however, demonstrated both courage and initiative. “His actions, with assistance
from his father, resulted in the arrest and charging of an extremely prolific criminal.”
