desperate for something to be done and had called for action. She commented: “On several
occasions ■visits were made by the dog wardens and after that the sit- - nation went quiet for a whila - - , “However, months later the com
plaints started again and by then villagers had had enough and feared the dog would attack some one. The council continued to receive complaints as residents were concerned about the animal’s continued aggressive behaviour. They feared i t wouldn’t be long before a child was attacked.: “One ■villager who had come into
contact with the dog described it as ‘evil’.”
: She added: “The complaints were discussed -with the police, who. under the Dangerous Dog Act, requested the dog to be removed from the ■village.” PC Jo Dolan, of Clitheroe Police,
said: “My concerns were for th e : safety of the community. -

. out of their homes in case the dog went for them.
; “The owners of the dog eventu ally, co-operated and the dog was put down. “From the feedback I have
received, the whole community is relieved.
• “I believe that had we ignored this, then a child could have been seriously injured because of the dog’s temperament and previous history of aggression.”. • Relieved by the outcome, Mr

A GRINDLETON cou ple have kept the wheels of fund-raising turning. : Despite the wet and
windy weather, Martin ; and Eileen Flatley suc cessfully completed a coast-to-coast bike ride in aid of charity. . The husband and ■wife
cycled 140 miles from Whitehaven to Sunder land, across the Lake D is tr ict and the Pen- nines.
. The duo were hoping to raise £1,000 each for - two charities. These are the Unicef
Cold Chain Project, which aims to build cold storage : fa c il it ie s in remote parts of Ethiopia - to allow the distribution of vaccines and help pro tect children against dis eases, and Operation, Hand in Hand, which is based in Nkoranza, Ghana, and aims to pro vide a home for aban doned and m enta lly - handicapped children. : Eileen (50), a breast
care nurse at Burnley General Hospital, and Martin (53), who is a local GP, completed the challenge in three-and-a- half days. Eileen , said: “The
