►Head says farewell to her village school

STAFF and pupils at Brennand’s

: Endowed Primary School, Slaid- burn, said farewell to retiring headteacher Mrs Barbara Milne- Redhead with a surprise party. After a service at St Andrew’s

■ Church, Slaidburn, during which Mrs Milne-Redhead was presented with a eucalyptus tree, the head teacher was unwittingly led to Slaid burn Village Hall for the secret farewell party. There she had the opportunity to

catch up with former members of staff, supply teachers, friends and ■villagers before being presented with travel tokens, a cake specially baked and iced by a member of staff and a book of memories. The hall had even been decorated with bunting made up of pictures

drawn by the school children. Our picture shows the gathering at the party.

.. ' “It was totally overwhelming and

amazing that the children had been able to keep it a secret!” Mrs Milne- Redhead exclaimed. Having enjoyed a teaching career

spanning 34 years, the last 19 of which have been spent at Brennand’s Endowed, Mrs Milne-Redhead described working there as a “pleas ure and a privilege”. Mrs Milhe-Redhead’s teaching

career began in 1974 at Brookside Primary School, Clitheroe, under the headship of Mr Howell Jones. “The school hall and kitchens were

not finished for the sta r t of the term,” Mrs Milne-Redhead recalled, “so headteachers from the other pri mary schools in town allowed us to

use their free spaces. At one point I was teaching in Pendle Junior School’s sick rooml” . After nine years at Brookside, Mrs

Milne-Redhead was appointed deputy headteacher at 'Waddington and 'West Bradford Primary School before joining Brennand’s Endowed in January 1990. “It’ll be a big wrench leaying the

school,” Mrs Milne-Redhead said. “The staff have been absolutely superb. Working in a village school you also get to know the children’s families so well, which has been such a great pleasure and privilege.” . She added that the preservation of -village schools was a subject close to

her heart. “I’m leaving the school at a time

when there are plenty of young chil dren in the catchment area and

admission numbers are good. At least I know the school will have a rosy future,” she explained. (Dne of the many highlights of her

time at Brennand’s Endowed, Mrs Milne-Redhead added, had been taking pupils on residential trips. “The last trip was my 19th from

Slaidburn,” she said. : “ Residential trips have changed a

great deal over the years,” Mrs Milne-Re’

dhead said. “Back at

Brookside School, I used to take children to Prior House, Richmond - a.lovely Georgian town house owned by Lancashire Education

Authority.” Mrs Milne-Redhead also planned

trips to Llangollen Youth Hostel and Kiln Hill Barn, Bassenthwaite. “In the early days we used to go with staff and children from Tosside,

Barrow and Gisburn, primary schools, but latterly the joint trips have just been with Gisburn School.. “Residential trips are successful

because they allow children to meet up before secondary school. They are such a wonderful experience for everyone.” During her retirement, the grand

mother of two, who lives in Worston, plans to play her piano, spend more time with her family, get out on her bike and travel more. “We’ve a motor home and I’m

hoping to find more time for travel ling and walking,” she said. Mrs .Milne-Redhead said she

would miss the s taff and the pupils, but certainly not the paper work.

,

The school’s new headteacher will be Charlotte Peregrine. (A230708/8)
