WHALLEY: . stunned league leaders Great Har- • wood on Saturday - while Read and Ribblesdale. Wanderers also registered convincing wins. : Substitute professional :

Ameer Khan, borrowed from Leyland for the week- > end, took an incredible 8- . 76 off 21 overs as Harwood * were skittled for just 110, • chasing Whalley’s 131-9. ' Khan also hit 33 a t I :

Cliffe Park, although Lee_* Kearsley top-scored with 40 off 72 balls. . The only other batsman

to reach double figures was ■ Richard Palmer, who made 18, but 131 proved enough, as Khan took charge. Read continued to show

their promise for the future ■ with a seven-wicket win overSettle.

. At Marshfield, the home

side won the toss and chose to bat in the hazy sun, but Read were not made to toil ; in the heat.. They restricted their

hosts to 144-9 in their 45 overs, with all the bowlers contributing. Jon Harvey saw off his

opposite number Bret Sil- vey for just two, trapped in , front, and four of the top five batsmen went cheaply. Matthew Wildman found

some support from Edward Read (19) and Robbie Pre ston (^ ) before being out for 33, and Neil Heseltine made an unbeaten 33, but despite denying Read the bowling

. points, Harvey’s men were happy to be chasing a target ofl45towin. Michael Whalley

departed for just four in , reply, bowled by Read, but Marsh and Kyle O’Connor set about building the : foundations..

bury. , And now the club is trying to find out if it is the high-

H

cst-cvcr score by a youth team player in a senior side. . He joined his dad; Malcolm, at the crease, when

Clitheroe lost an early wicket and the family duo started to make good progress on a slow damp pitch; At 90, Ian was joined hy Paul Earnshaw, and their

partnership flourished as the young batsman hit nine- sixes and 16fours, with some breathtaking hitting.'. i -With sensible contributions by Chris Parkinson, Jason:

Walsh and Thomas Neville, Clitheroe reached 253- far too many for Salesbury.

. Tight bowling from Paul Earnshaw, James Scott, Mark' Preston and especially Liam Nuttall (4-15} meant Clitheroe came out on lop by more than 100 runs. ■ . - If anyone can help the club establish if Scott’s knock

is a record, please contact the club at Chatbum Road. Both were closing in on

half centuries, before Marsh was caught for 45. O’Connor managed six more before being run out, but Harvey (23 not out) and Andrew Rush ton (11 not out) completed a rela tively routine victory with nine overs and seven wick- ets in hand. . Ribblesdale successfully defended their total of 199- 7 ; - against

lowly

Oswaldtwistle, winning inside 40 overs by 62 runs. After putting on 64 for

the f irs t ' wicket with Henry Kay, Alastair Marsh fell for a 51-ball 52 - 46 of which came in boundaries - and although Andrew and Gerard Met calf set about the order,. taking six wickets between them, sub-professional Nishit Shetty made 36, and David Howard also reached his half-century,- scoring exactly 50. - Stephen Kerr finished unbeaten on 18 as Wan derers totalled 199-7. All the bowlers then chipped in to dismiss

Immanuel for 137, with only Daniel Metcalf (47) and Andrew Metcalf (24) putting up any resistance. Howard was the pick of the bowlers with 3-41 off

,13.5 overs, with Ian Brit- cliffe (2-32); Shetty (2-27) and Martin Pratt (2-33L also impressing. Mark Hargreaves took

6-58 o f f ,18 overs for Clitheroe at Barnoldswck, but a poor batting display saw Neil Bolton’s side go down to a 73-run setback. , Hargreaves ripped

through the hosts, with Farouk Hussain chipping in with 3-46, as only open-' er Matthew Nutter (42), David Scothern (57 not out) and Shoib Khan (22) could put together any sort of score. But Zahid Iqbal and

professional Clinton Peake hit back with four wickets each, with two run outs, as Clitheroe hit the self- destruct button. Only Bolton; (20),

Andrew Pearce (26) and Carl Palmer (21 not out) could make double figures.

Great week for Tim!

A, YOUNG Clitheroe cricketer has led his Lan cashire Under 14s side to victory in an England Schools’ Cricket Associa tio n - to u rn am en t - in Taunton.

.

' And in the same week, Tim le Breton received a call up from the England and Wales Cricket Board to attend a special spin bowling clinic at the National Cricket Perfor mance Centre in Lough borough. ■ Le Breton captained the

Lancashire Schools’ team in a series of five matches played over a week at King’s School, Taunton. Lancashire.won all five of

ner’s trophy from former Test umpire and Somerset county stalwart, Ken Palmer. Le Breton had cap

tained Lancashire for the first time when the side drubbed Yorkshire by six wickets at Highfield CC

■ the previous week. But as he led his team

out on to the field on the first morning of the Taunton tournament, he received a call asking him to attend a two-day inten sive course in spin bowling organised by the ECB at

• their £6 million pound training centre attached to Loughborough University. • The National Cricket-

their matches - beating . Shropshire, Cornwall, Kent, Wiltshire and Buck inghamshire. Their tally of 91 points out of a possible 100 set a record for the com petition, which has been held for the last 23 years. And he received the win

Valley sides slip to defeat

ALL four Ribble Valley' sides slipped to defeat in Sunday’s round of Rib blesdale League fixtures.. At Whalley Road,-

Read’s te s t was to try and unseat leaders Great Harwood.

. Professional Jon Ha'r-

vey bowled superbly to take 5-64 off 17 overs, ably assisted by Warren - Eastham, who claimed 4-. 38 off 16, as the locals did well to hold Harwood to 184-9. ■ Patrick Swanney and" capta in Allan Armer shared 71 for the first wicket, with the skipper making a 49-ball 48, but ■ Read took three wickets- on 111.to leave Harwood with five down. Another four wickets

would fall, but Paul Houldsworth, batting a t - five, finished unbeaten on-, 39 to frustrate Read. , Read got off to a ter

rific s ta r t in their run chase as openers Nick Marsh (55) and Michael Whalley (35) put on 76. The locals looked in

charge, but when Harvey was bowled by'paid man Syed Shahabuddin for 15, the pendulum swung. :

. Paul Newton proved . the difference between the sides as he bowled superbly for his haul of 6- 26 off 13 over's, as Read valiantly fell 14 runs short, closing on 170-8.,; • They face Padiham at

the Arbories on Saturday, who registered a 70-run win over Whalley at Sta tion Road.;, The Saddique brothers

Umar and Abdul helped, Padiham build a defend- able total, after profes-' sional Kashif Siddique departed for just six. • Abdul made a patient:

55, off- 113 deliveries, while older brother Umar ,

hit a 100-ball 83 before being bowled by Neil Cordingley. Padiham closed on

202-9, with David Oi-Neill claiming 4-40 and Cordingley 3-41. • Whalley were soon in

trouble as Matthew Han son went for a duck with the score on just two. He was the firs t of

Nasir M.ehmood’s four.' wickets. Martin Davies (19)

and sub-professional Anwar Khan (30) shared 53 for the second wicket, before the former was trapped by Siddique. Khan was caught by

Peter Shirtcliffe off Mehmood, and although there were double figure scores for Cordingley (20), Lee Kearsley (13) and Declan Fitzhenry (27), Whalley were never really up with the rate and were eventually, all

out for 132. Ribblesdale Wanderers

suffered a surprise 34-run defeat at the Applegarth against rock-bottom Earby, who had previous ly only won once before the weekend, only to tre ble their tally, also stun ning Baxenden on Satur day." Earby made 207-7,

with professional ■ Ali Azmat returning to form with 75, before Dave Cockell took 5-45 to help dismiss Wanderers for 173. Clitheroe lost by an

even closer margin, being bowled out for 167, chas ing Blackburn Northern’s 178 at Chatbum Road. Mohammed Jamil took

6-50 to deny Neil Bolton’s side, after Nass er Iqbal hit an unbeaten 66 for the visitors.

Performance Centre is where contracted players for the full England Squad like Andrew Flintoff and James Anderson train between Test matches. Commenting on the best

week of his cricket career to date, le Breton said:

“Being asked to captain the Lancashire side was a real thrill. “The team are fantasti

cally talented, but it is really hard work making sure the right bowlers bowled at the right time and had the best fields set for them.” “I can’t wait to get to

Loughborough. The facili ties look amazing. I think there are just 16 of us selected from across the country between the ages of 13 and 16,” I t will be another tough

challenge for the Stony- hurst youngster, who, in his first year at the College this summer term, held downi a regular place in their first-XI and has taken the field for Clitheroe first team in cup, league arid Twenty/2() matches.

. Tim le Breton is pic

tured receiving the trophy from Ken Palmer, (s)

WHALLEY Tennis Club’s mixed doubles team whitewashed Burnley B in the Slazenger East Lan- ncashire Tennis League First Division on Tuesday. . The game at Whalley saw an 8-0 win for the home side.

;

delayed by around 30 minutes because of a heavy thunder and lightning storm;

_

But they had to wait for their win as play was ‘

The wait proved to be worthwhile, however, as blue

sky appeared and the game was concluded without further interruption. The Whalley first pair of Henry Farrar and Cathy

Green scored a 6/1, 7/5 win against the visitors’ top pair and then beat the second pair 6/3,6/2.

- And the Whalley second pairing of Matt Lambert

and Sue Liver were equally impressive with scores of 6/3, 6/3 against the top pair and 6/3, 6/1 against the second pair.

Rovers handed a tough start

BLACKBURN Rovers Ladies have been

, handed .the toughest possible start to.the, 2008-09 Women’s Premier League season. . Adam Lakeland’s side, who will again play their home games at Shawbridge, fin ished eighth in the National Division last term) and will visit reigning champions Arsenal when the new season gets under way on Sunday, August lYth.' ' I t is the second tim'e in three years that Rovers have met Arsenal’s all-stars on the

' opening weekend, having played them at Shawbridge in their first ever top-flight game in 2006. And it doesn’t get any easier for Rovers,

who will face big-spending Chelsea in their first home game seven days later,, before welcoming Leeds United to .Clitheroe the following week..

\ Next up, Rovers travel to newly-pro

moted Nottingham Forest on August 31st, while new signings Chantelle Parry and Faye McCoy will no doubt be looking forward to going back to their old club Liverpool when Rovers travel to Mersey side in mid-September...

-. Arsenal, who also won the FA Cup last season, visit Lancashire on December

: 14th, whilst Rovers end the campaign at Bristol Academy on January 18th. , After hearing the fixtures. Lakeland

' said: “Well it doesn’t get much tougher than that, does it?

■ ■ “There won’t be any'easy games in this;

league next year, but Arsenal have lost one or two players to Chelsea over the sum mer, so maybe th a t’s weakened them slightly. But at the same time, it’s proba bly made Chelsea stronger! “I’ll be going through our pre-season

programme with the players this week, and when I tell them about our opening fixtures. I’m sure they’ll work even harder to get into the best possible shape for those firsl two or three games. “They’re big games and i t’s a tough

start, but we don’t fear anyone in this league. “We’ve competed well against the top

teams in the past, and feel confident we can do so again, especially as we’ve strengthened ourselves this summer.”
