tiful adaptation of-Khaled Hosseini’s novel. ■; I t is a powerful and moving story set in Afghanistan that touches on issues of friend-

e

■ ship, loyalty, family and love. In- the story,:; the close.. . friendship of two hoys, Amir

■ and Hassan, is destroyed by Amir’s one devastating mis-

■ take of choosing not to act and come to his friend’s rescue ■: because he was afraid.-- i ;;

N holiday recently I enjoyed the film “The ■Kite Runner”, a beau--:

friend because he can’t cope

; own weakness and betrayal. , One childhood mistake leads!

• to another, and a lifetime of; guilt. • ' -

' ' ^ ' “:There is a way to be good ■ !.'

; again;..” is a key line in the , film and Amir is encouraged;;

. to take on a difficult challenge y that makes amends for past ■ wrongs. .-Being able to do something to “make amends”

;- is really helpful, although we -. ■ don’t always have the oppor-

' ■ 'Amir then-pushes away his -- tunity to put things right in

the way that we might like to. ; :The story.reminded me of

: giveness.that Jesus offers us.; He wants to set us free from

the universal problem of; how ■ we deal with; past mistakes. Many, people continue to suf fer from carrying the baggage of past mistakes, affecting both how we relate to others and how we feel about our selves. The story points out. that there is a way out - that our past doesn’t have to deter-' mine the way, tha t we are now... that we can be released from the burden of guilt. - ■ For me that release comes from the amazing gift of for-'

■ guilt and .make .us whole through his healing forgive- i'ness. And tha t forgiveness

■ deep love for us. Just ask. ' 1 John 1:9.- “If we co p ^ |

writer used a hydraulic platform or “cherry picker” on which to stand while undertaking his holy work and, when the work was done, a lorry came to bear it

off.. As the cherry-picker was being loaded

on to the lorry’s trailer, a miracle occurred.

Without the slightest human interven v

tion, the spirit entered the lorry and it betook itself to roll gently down the hill

, and enter Harry Garlick’s. L It is not for us mere mortals to know what the lorry intended to do there hut, for what it is worth, I rather think it wanted to arrange some television adver tising for Byrne’s, in order to spread the word and bring the joys of the spirit to a larger congregation.

Whatever it was that motivated the

lorry, it was careful not to cause the slightest injury to any of the throng gathered in the street and, despite the recent events in Jerusalem itself, no one in the crowd jumped up onto the lorry to try to shoot the driver. Despite all the economic troubles cur-

• rently besetting us, we have much for which to be grateful. There are hatreds and grudges aplenty in our Jerusalem, but nobody is trying to kill anyone else. In our Jerusalem; a runaway lorry is a runaway lorry and not an instrument of murder. Though we are involved in two wars, they are mercifully small and far away and our losses, though overwhelm ing to the families of oiir lost soldiers, do not force us to live in fear. Life is good in the Ribble Valley and

will continue to be good; Our current anxieties are tiny when compared to the anxieties facing others. How fortunate we and our children are

to live in a place where a lorry crashing and hurting no one is newsworthy. What blessingsweenjoy!
