‘CALL DAVID ON
. In general we organise our ilives as we want. Here on ,
I
- Wednesday, there on Friday, holiday next month. But it is 'different with'nature as any .
. gardener will tell you; I may ! have great plans for working ; ,'.in th e garden, but when i t :. comes to it, it may be too wet ' to plant, or too dry to dig. The frost may kill the bedding .
;,plants I have just put out'. - As Harvest has just passed -
' (passed many of us by I sus pect), it is useful to remind -
: ourselves that whatever our capabilities, at the end of the ■. : day we are reliant on God.:
:hought for the Week We can’t make it alone
SN ’T, i t good to be in charge of your own life?
One only has to listen to a farmer at harvest to realise his dependence on that which is out of his control, the weather. ■ Harvest then serves to •
remind us that- whatever our technological capablities the general-rule is - (jod provides, man co-operates, then the har- .vest follows. ■
■ ' My'days at theological col lege are a long way off now, but one of the things I contin ue to carry from those days is a love of the book of Psalms ■ Throughout the 150 chap
ters, the writers of the Psalms tell us that not only does God operate in nature, he operates, in history. So Psalm 104 is'all
about the land, the sea, the birds and the animals. Psalm 105 is about the. historical deliverance of the Jews from their bondage in Egypt. ' ; • This is the point. It is God
who acts to save his people from going under in life. We make a huge mistake if we ‘ reckon we can make it on our . own, both in the harvest and ■
.in our personal lives. . A-people without God is a
people in jeopardy. A people ■ without God lacks power. A people without God lies open to every force of evil..
. But God is not simply there ■ as a point of reference we do or do not look up, God has done
something to make his people what they have the capacity to be. Just as God brought the Jews out of slavery, he came in Christ to live and and die and riseagain. ■ T h a t is God’s initiative.
What folly is ours if we think we can work out our salvation in disregard for, what God h g ^ - doneV God" provides.’We c^jp, operate; th a t way comes the
harvest. That way comes sal- - vation. That way comes the health of the whole communi ty now. ■_ ' ,

MOTICEBOABn ' a weekly look at local issues, people and places n ^ Give children responsibility
f I '^HIS week’s Advertiser carries a I rather odd story about 12 children
■ -A_ from St Michael and St John’s Pri-. mary School, Clitheroe,'who have been
{helping the police to deter vandalism in the Castle grounds by taking photo graphs and writing a report on .what they saw. It is an interesting idea, but I think it cdulibe improved upon.
' , The Castle and .its grounds are really .-the “badge” of our town, as w e ll^ pro- • viding an excellent communal facility, i .Whenever I have visitors from abroad, I . take them there after Whalley Abbey, Ribchester, Cowman’s and Byrne’s. I t is
' part of what our district is all about and. we have'every r e ^ n to be proud of it; ' . It'.is.a pity that not all of our young- -
r sters feel it is really their’s and that some "are content to degrade it with graffiti and vandalism: I t is even more of a pity when
-decent youngsters, who know who the ' culprits are, do not deal with them, them selves, or seek the assistance of responsi ble adults. . Here is a suggestion. Suppose that each
class, a t each of Clitheroe’s secondary schools, was given a couple of beds, S bit of lawn and a stretch of pathway to look

after. Under the direction of a teacher who liked gardening, they could develop their own plan and rota for looking after their “territory” and nip down, after school, to keep it in order and beautify it. I can think of a number of benefits. All
our children would learn something about our joint responsibility for looking after our common heritage. Leaders who do not happen to be good at sports would have their skills developed. Children who are more able practically than academi cally would have an opportunity to shine. , Children would learn the rudiments of
botany, biology and horticulture without even realising it. More parents and grandparents would be drawn to visit the Castle grounds. Our Council Tax would not have to bear the burden of employing

a great increase of traffic on the road and most children at the school had to cross the road.
The parish council said there had been
so many gardeners. And there would be a benefit more important than any of these. Our children would come to feel
that they “owned” the Castle grounds and would take pride in it.
They would no longer drop sweet
papers or beer cans there or kick footballs into the flower beds. The children who “owned” the Castle grounds would sim ply not tolerate others destroying their handiwork.. For generations, the’last thing Japan ese schoolchildren have done, before going
• home in the afternoon, has been to clean their schools. No cleaners are employed at all and the children learn to take respon sibility for and pride in their surround ings. Vandalism simply does not exist. A good friend who spent the year before last teaching in a Japanese school tells me
. that the work is well organised and the children enjoy it. Popular music is played
‘on the school tannoy whilst it is being done. There is no reason to think that our children would not behave responsibly, if only we allowed them to do it. e-mail: (

Anita hits the charity bull’s-eye on holiday!
A SABDEN woman found she JZA had met her match when she
L jL teamed up for a game of'darts
■ ivith the Crafty Cockney Eric Bris tow. Anita Whalley went along to a chari
ty event and found herself playing the five times darts world champion and five times World Masters winner in a friendly encounter. Mrs Whalley, who has an apartment
in Los Christianos, Tenerife, also met another darts maestro, John Lowe, the three times world champion and the first player to throw the perfect 501 nine dart finish on television. A former Sabden parish councillor and
former landlady of the village’s Pendle Witch pub, Mrs Whalley used to play for the pub team but it is many years since she has thrown a dart. But when she won a raffle at a Sum
mer Nites charity event in Tenerife and found the prize was a match against one of the former top players in the world, she bravely borrowed a set of arrows and made her way to the oche. She admits it was a rather one-sided
25 years ago
A PLAN for Whalley to “twin” with another country had moved a step near- -er. The man behind the move, parish councillor Mr Eric Ronnan, had sent letters to three towns in the Loire Val ley, expressing an interest in twinning with them because they were of compa rable size.
• • Pensioners in the Shawbridge area
welcomed an idea which would allow them to draw their pensions a t a local shop and save them a journey to King Street or Whalley Road. The head post master was looking into the possibility of having an agency which could deal with pensions and stamps, after the pre-
.vious sub-post office in Pendle Road was demolished 16 years earlier.
