Tributes paid to an elegant lady

by Jean Miller

MANY tributes paid to the late Miss Ida Dugdale, who died in- the Royal Blackburn Hospital aged 88, have described her as ele gant, kind, considerate, loving and conscientious and very hard-' working. Although not directly related,

Ida was a family connection of mine as her cousins are also my cousins. At the age of 20, she h ad , lost her parents, grandparents and little sister, so was a minor as the legal adult age was then 21. She had, however, aunts and cousins in Clitheroe and the sur rounding area, including her aunt Mrs Nellie Dugdale,- whose hus band, Frank, was a former Mayor of Clitheroe. She lived -with them in Park Avenue until 1952. Later Ida moved to a flat in

York Street, Clitheroe, where she was very happy for 42 years.

Working for Trutex for many

years, she was known for being very conscientious and employees were not surprised to be asked: "Are you sure you have given me the correct birthdate?". Tributes about her working life

were paid by Mr Derek Bush, Mr Howel Jones about her involve ment with Chatbum Methodist Church, as well as the Rev. Ward Jones, who was minister there for five years. I concur the sentim ents

For a number of years Ida was

secretary of the Festival of Youth in the former Wesley Methodist Circuit and I clearly recall as a junior reporter on this paper over 50 years ago ringing her up to get the previous evening's results.

expressed by my cousin, David, who was her godson and, -with his family, very close to her. I also . add that she was always exceed ingly smartly dressed, whatever the occasion. She will be missed greatly by her family and a -wide circle of friends and acquaintanc- es.

A celebration of Ida's life at Trinity Church on Monday fol- . lowed cremation at Accrington.

Give blood is the plea

WITH Christmas just around the corner, why not give the gift of life by becoming a blood donor? •Blood stocks tend to

dip over the festive period and , new and existing donors are urged to attend sessions being held at West Bradford Village Hall on November 26th. They -will take place at

the village hall, in Grindleton Road, from 2 to 4 p.m and again from 5- 30 to 7-30 p.m. Giving, blood is quick, easy and virtually pain free, and most adults aged up to 70 are able to do it. , To find out more about

giving blood and how it saves -. lives, call ' .the National Blood Service helpline on 0845 7711711, v is i t . its -website, -at www.blood.co.uk, or see BBC2 Ceefax page 465.

Inquest held

A TO^YEAR-OLD woman suspected to have developed an asbestos- related cancer died short-

. ly-after being admitted to Clitheroe Community Hospital. -An inquest heard that a

scan had indicated the possibility of mesothe lioma, but the only con tact' that Margaret Mary Banks, a retired tracer, of Binder Close, Wadding ton, had with asbestos was wearing a gas mask

- during World War II. . - -V The inquest heard that

‘a post-mortem examina-: tion has taken place but further histology tests were required.
