favourites for the title at the start of the season, Halifax have taken a few games to get into their stride, but showed glimpses of real quality against the Blues. The omens were not
good before the game had even started. " The kick-off was delayed 15 minutes, due to
. problems on the M62, with seven of the Clitheroe squad only landing with minutes to spare. . Not that you would
■■r>
have known it from the early exchanges, Clitheroe snapped into the tackles, and the first 15 minutes were played at a fast pace, with chances for both sides. However, the hosts went
ahead on 18 minutes as Clitheroe conceded a free kick 25 yards from goal in a central position, and a
. tapped lay off saw Colin Daniel, on loan from Crewe, strike a perfect curling left foot shot into the top corner, which gave Martin Fearon no chance. Shortly after, Ryan
Fisher limped off, to be replaced by 17-year-old Mark Sharpies. ' Just before the half hour, Clitheroe should have been level as Carl Lomax was sent clear by Bernard Mor- ley but his decision to chip . the keeper proved;the wrong one. Three minutes later,
Scott Redhead cracked in a drive from fully 25 yards out, but it cannoned back off the crossbar. ::
people’s Scott Redhead As half-time drew near,
a rash of yellow cards were flourished by the referee, and Redhead was lucky to stay on the pitch, with the home fans were baying for a red card after a clumsy challenge. Clitheroe had the worst
possible start to the second half, with Daniel shrug ging off two challenges before crashing the ball home just two minutes in. The Blues brought on
their remaining two substi tutes, and Matt Edging- ton started . to make inroads.
' Around the.hour mark he put in a dangerous cross, only for Lomax to put the ball over the bar from 10 yards out, and shortly after he drove the ball towards- goal, only to see it hit the underside of the bar. The game was finished
as a contest a minute later when more bright play down the right flank saw Daniel register his hat- trick.
Things then got worse as
Anthony Johnson was stretchered off uncon scious, and shortly after wards Ian Flannery limped off, leaving the Blues to play the last 15 minutes with only nine ‘ men.
. Halifax scored a fourth in injury time, and whilst the yorkshireiiien proba bly deserved the win, the ' scoreline was undoubtedly flattering..

BLUES’ NEXT GAMES

V Boston United ■rCFACarlsbcrKVasc)

(UniBond League Challenge Cup) ... Shawbridge ■
~ ,vGarforlhTown' ^ . Tuesday, 7-45 p.m.--'. .
2-1 win against UniBond Premier Division oppo nents shows beating Boston is certainly within their capabilities. After a series of finan
cial troubles, the Pilgrims have gone from trying to
. v
win their last game of the season at Wrexham in May 2007 to preserve their Football League status, to being demoted from the Conference to the Confer ence North, and then to the UniBond Premier. It is something of a
fairytale clash,. for Clitheroe to welcome Boston to Shawbridge. And Reynolds hopes the
tie whets the appetite of local football fans: “Boston played Cambridge United in the FA Cup on Saturday and there were almost 2,000 . fans there. They’re a mas sive club, and we are expect ing three or four hundred of their fans at Shawbridge.
“We have been getting
crowds of over 300, and with only Burnley at home locally, hopefully we can get a few more people from the town and the area down to support us. “They are 16th in the
UniBond Premier Divi sion, and although we lost at Frickley, who are 21st, in the FA Cup, we beat Bradford Park Avenue in the Trophy, and they are fourth. “ It’s not an impossible
task, although we know it will be tough. ^ “ If we start well and
play like we can, and the crowd get behind us and generate some noise, we
have a great chance. “ The pitch certainly
won’t be to their liking, it doesn’t favour the away side, and we will be posi tive and go out to win the game. “A replay would be good
financially, but we’re not looking at that, we want to go all out to win.” • ■ The game comes hot on
the heels of a 4-0 defeat at FC Halifax Town on Sat urday, who, of course, replaced Halifax Town, themselves in the Football League as recently as 2002.
