Valley entries are needed in contest

by Duncan Smith

TH IS year marks th e 50th anniversary of the annual Lancashire Best Kept 'Village competi t io n , w ith o rg an ise r s h o p in g for a bum p e r crop of entries. Surprisingly, given its

wealth of close-knit rural communities, the Kibble Valley has been somewhat under-represented in the competition in recent years, although those communities which do enter have a fine track record of success. Over its 50 years, the

competition has grown and evolved to include classes for hamlets, small, medium and large v i l lages, the latter able to accommodate communi ties as large as Clitheroe. There is also a host of other prizes, recognising everything from the best kept bowling green, crick et pitch and public gar dens to village notice- boards, pubs, war memo rials, public toilets and many more. Organisers stress they

are not looking for “pret ty, pretty chocolate-box villages”, but for those

In the early days of the competition the main winning village was pre sented with a hefty wood en sign to be proudly dis played. However, having the sign made and erected often dragged on for months, one village wait ing almost two years for its trophy. Cther winners received trees, transplant ed from the garden of a competition committee member! 1970 saw the first formal presentation of trophies in a special cer emony, a tradition still carried on, with various

which display real evi dence of a community working together to improve and maintain their surroundings and in doing so strengthening the bonds of village life. Often it is left to the

parish council to enter, not least because one of the competitions strongest supporters is the Lan cashire Association of Parish and Town Councils (LAPTC). Yet it does not have to be the parish council - any local group can take up the challenge, be it a youth club. Scout Troop, church congrega tion or just a group of friend and neighbours. Experience over 50 years has shown that even those village s which do not always win prizes are win ners in other ways, involvement in the compe t it ion fostering new friendships, a real spirit of “village pride” and even some friendly rivalry between neighbouring vil lages. Judging for this year’s

competition takes place from June 1st to July 14th, so there is plenty of time to get organised, but now is the time to contact the organisers. Anyone wanting more information

trophies, cups and plaques donated. For the first dozen-or-so years the finals judging was carried out by invited guests such as the county surveyor, a landscape architect and, in One instance, Manches-, ter’s director of parks and cemeteries. The main prize was then presented by a different local VIP or civic dignitarty, including Lady Clitheroe and Lady Shuttleworth. From 1972 onwards,

the finals judge has also presented the awards and from the mid-1980s the organisers introduced a

about the Lancashire Best Kept Village Competition should contact Jeanette Lowe on 01257 481415. Prizes will be presented

in a special ceremony at Stanley House hotel, in Mellor, one of the compe tition supporters this year, together with the LAPTC and Lancashire Life. Incidentally, organisers

are always keen to hear from more volunteer judges, able to visit com peting villages unan nounced during the judg ing period and assess their efforts. Judges are allocat ed a village, or villages, and visit twice during the judging period, a month apart. No special skills are required, just a keen, eye for detail, and training is provided. A special meet ing for potential new judges will take place at Bilsborrow Village Hall at 7-30 p.m on Monday, March 31st. There will also be a judges’ confer ence at Chipping Village Hall on May 18th, includ ing a chance to take part in a mock assessment of the village and compare notes. Again, anyone interest

ed in being a judge should contact Jeanette Lowe on 01257 481415.

“celebrity factor”, invit ing well-known people from the world of local TV and radio to judge and present prizes. Among those given the honour were TV news pre senters Bob Smithies and Frank Mellor, radio pre senters Fred Downham and Keith Macklin, pre senter of “One Man and his D o g ” Eric Halsall, and TV weatherman Fred Talbot. High Sheriffs, local authors, senior coun cil chiefs and even the UK’s first female Chief Constable have also done the job!

Have a say on your health care!

A SURVEY to find out what NHS patients think about the community health care they receive is being held in Ribble Val ley.

The results will be used

to improve patients' expe riences and highlight areas where performance is up to scratch or could be improved. The survey is being

held by East Lancashire Teaching Primary Care Trust among a random selection of patients regis tered with a GP in each of the five boroughs covered by the PCT, including Ribble Valley.

Over the forthcoming

weeks, the targeted p a t ien ts will receive a questionnaire asking for their views. They will be asked about various issues, including making appointments, quality of care, communication with health professionals, information, medicines, involvement in care, refer rals and health promo tion. Every PCT in England

is carrying out the survey, which is part of commit ments set out in the NHS Plan to design the service around the needs of patients.

The results will con

tribute to the Annual Health Check, due to be published in the summer. David Peat, chief exec

utive at the PCT, said: “We hope patients who receive the questionnaire will take the time to help us.

“Their views are vital

in helping us find out how we are doing in the provi sion of community health and how we can improve.” In all, 1,200 question

naires will go to selected patients in the East Lan cashire PCT area with a deadline of April 2nd to respond.
